Volvo celebrates 75 years of safety in June

For immediate release

Volvo Cars of Canada Ltd. has set aside June to mark 75 years of automotive safety leadership, part of the company's year-long 75th Anniversary celebration.

With safety as one of the company's three core values, and a long list of safety innovations to its credit, no celebration of the company's history would be complete without acknowledging the role of safety, Volvo Canada president Paul Cummings says. "That's why we're turning over the month of June to promoting safety in general and Volvo initiatives in particular."

The June program includes advertising, public service and other activities designed to get Canadians to think about the many aspects of safety, and to showcase leading-edge Volvo technologies. "June is the start of the traditional summer vacation travel period, and a good time to get people to think about the implications of things like proper installation of child safety seats, seat belt use and even personal security," Cummings adds.

The company's dedication to safety has expanded beyond protecting occupants in the event of a collision. Among the many safety initiatives currently under study at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre in Göteborg, Sweden, are new vision technologies first shown on the Safety Concept Car; aspects of Human-Machine Interface and the role distractions play in collisions; the proper use of seatbelts by pregnant women; and the critical information supplied to rescue and medical personnel in the moments immediately following a crash.

Volvo automobiles are sold and serviced through 42 retailers across Canada. Volvo Cars of Canada Ltd. is headquartered in Toronto. The 2002 Volvo automobile line includes the flagship S80 luxury sedan, versatile V70 wagon and rugged Cross Country, exotic C70 coupe and convertible, the sporty S60 sedan and compact S40 and V40 models. The first of the next generation SUV, the Volvo XC90, will be introduced this fall.
