La nuova fabbrica di Volvo Cars a Torslanda aumenta la capacità produttiva da 200.000 a 300.000 auto l’anno

• L’aumentata capacità produttiva della fabbrica di Torslanda costituisce un passo significativo verso l’obiettivo a lungo termine di Volvo: 800.000 vetture prodotte e vendute all’anno.
• Il nuovo impianto verrà utilizzato per produrre la nuova XC90 SUV, che verrà lanciata nel corso del 2014 e arriverà sul mercato nel primo trimestre del prossimo anno. La nuova XC90 sarà il primo modello a sfruttare a pieno le caratteristiche della nuova piattaforma SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) di Volvo, che consente di migliorare il design delle vetture, la sicurezza e di realizzare importanti economie di scala in chiave di produzione.

• Il nuovo impianto viene inaugurato lo stesso giorno nel quale si celebra il 50esimo compleanno della fabbrica di Torslanda ed è parte del gigantesco piano di trasformazione industriale da 11 miliardi di dollari varato da Volvo e attualmente in corso, metà del quale destinato allo sviluppo della nuova architettura dei veicoli e dei motori ecologici Drive-E.

• Håkan Samuelsson, Presidente & CEO di Volvo Cars, sottolinea invece come il nuovo impianto costituisca un investimento importante in chiave futura per Volvo Cars così come per la città di Goteborg, sede di Volvo sin dalle origini: “E’ giusto che celebriamo oggi 50 anni di produzione a Torslanda sottolineando al tempo stesso il nostro impegno per il futuro in qualità di costruttore globale. Oggi stiamo affermando che Torslanda è il nostro centro di comando e la nostra casa”.

• Il nuovo impianto è uno dei più avanzati e moderni del mondo, non solo in termini di tecnologie impiegate ma anche per i processi e le pratiche di lavorazione che impiega. Nell’impianto sono utilizzati circa 300 robot, ma l’aspetto più significativo è la riduzione della completa automazione a favore di una crescente cooperazione fra la forza lavoro più qualificata e i robot. Meno robot significa costi inferiori e una migliore utilizzazione della superficie.
• Il nuovo impianto vedrà al lavoro squadre più piccole rispetto al passato, formate da cinque – otto persone, tutte competenti in fatto di controllo qualità, azioni correttive e manutenzione. Così da arrivare a un processo produttivo il più possibile versatile e in grado di ridurre i fermi e le conseguenti inefficienze. Nel nuovo impianto è previsto l’impiego di 80 nuovi operai specializzati.

Volvo Cars’ new plant in Torslanda increases manufacturing capacity from 200,000 to 300,000 cars a year

Volvo Cars today opens its new 24,000 square metres manufacturing facility in Torslanda, Gothenburg, increasing its manufacturing capacity from approximately 200,000 cars a year to approximately 300,000 a year and moving it a significant step closer towards achieving its long term goal of selling 800,000 cars a year.

The new body shop will be used to manufacture the all new XC90 SUV, which will be launched later this year and go on sale in the first quarter of next year. The XC90 will be the first Volvo to use the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), a flexible system for making a range of models that improves design, economies of scale and safety, among other things.

The new plant is being inaugurated on the same day that Volvo celebrates the 50th anniversary of its plant in Torslanda and forms part of Volvo’s ongoing USD 11 billion transformation plan, almost half of which is being spent on developing its new vehicle architecture and the development of its Drive-E engine range.

“With the investment in a new body shop we are creating the potential to increase production capacity in Torslanda from today’s approximately 200,000 cars annually to 300,000 cars”, said Lars Wrebo, Senior Vice President, Purchasing & Manufacturing. ”This investment show very clearly that Volvo Cars believes in Sweden as production location and also the importance of having manufacturing close to research and development.”

Håkan Samuelsson, President & CEO, said the new plant represents a significant investment by Volvo Cars in its own future as well as in the future of the city of Gothenburg, where it has been based for the last 87 years.

“It is particularly appropriate that we are today celebrating 50 years of car making in Torslanda at the same time as underlining our commitment to our future as a global car manufacturer by expanding our manufacturing capacity in Gothenburg,” he said. “What we are saying today is this: Torslanda is both our headquarters and our home.”

The new plant is one of the most modern in the world, not simply in terms of the technology it uses, but also the working practices it utilizes. On the technology front, the plant will use approximately 300 robots, but significantly it has reduced the level of automatisation on the production line in favour of increasing the manner in which robots and qualified workers operate together. Having fewer robots reduces investment costs and means floor space is utilized better.

On the relationship between the robots and workers, the new plant will work with smaller teams of between five to eight people, rather than 15 or so in the rest of Torslanda. All the team members will work closely together and must be able to carry out fault tracing, corrections and maintenance. This has created a more flexible production process that is also able to reduce stoppage time and thus efficiency and production volumes. The new plant expects to employ around 80 new qualified workers.
