The new Volvo C70 – "Two in One": Chamber Music and Open-air Rock

Even when it comes to sound quality, the new Volvo C70 is two cars in one. A concert hall or an outdoor arena – the sound system has been developed to offer high-class audio reproduction with the roof up or down.

Volvo Cars is one of the few automotive manufacturers that develops its own sound system and components, and has done so successfully for many years.
Now, with the new C70 convertible, Volvo's sound system has taken yet another step forward in sound quality and power.
Its main features are a high-class digital amplifier and, following intensified collaboration with Dynaudio®, a speaker system that is world-class in every respect.

  • In short, the new Volvo C70 convertible is fitted with a world-class sound system whose main characteristics are:
  • Perfect sound thanks to digital technology
  • Automatically adjusted sound level when the roof is down
  • Mind-boggling 910 W output
  • World-famous Dynaudio® speakers
  • Dual subwoofers behind the backrests

A real acoustic challenge
A car represents one of the most difficult challenges for an audio engineer. The passenger compartment has irregular shapes, it is a mixture of hard and soft materials and has considerable variation in surface structures. In addition, the road surface changes as you drive.
In a convertible the situation is further complicated by the fact that the roof is sometimes up and sometimes down.
In the new C70 model, Volvo Cars has invested in the latest digital technology to control and adapt sound reproduction to the most challenging conditions. The sound experience should remain consistent and first-rate regardless of where or how you drive.

Automatic adjustment
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology adapts the sound to the design of the passenger compartment and the positioning of the speakers. DSP is also used for  fine adjustment of the tone curve, contributing to the creation of natural sound quality. One important ingredient in this system is a digital 130 W amplifier that is considerably more efficient than its analogue equivalent.

Thanks to digital technology, the sound can be adapted to the current driving situation. Not only the volume but also the tone settings are adjusted automatically in line with the car’s speed. The sound is also adjusted automatically when the car’s roof is up or down to ensure that the listener gets the same sound experience regardless of ambient conditions.

  • Three systems to choose betweenThere are three sound system levels available for the new Volvo C70:
  • Performance – with a 4x20 W amplifier and four speakers
  • High Performance – with a 4x40 W amplifier and eight speakers
  • Premium Sound – with a 5x130 W digital amplifier, Dolby® Pro Logic II Surround and up to fourteen speakers, including dual subwoofers (option) with integrated amplifiers. In total, the Premium Sound system with double subwoofers has an output of almost 1 kW.

Premium Sound – Dynaudio® sound
The sign of Premium Sound quality in the Volvo C70 is shown by the Dynaudio® logo on the dashboard.  Dynaudio® is one of the world’s foremost developers and manufacturers of speaker systems, both for home use and for professional studios.
With the launch of the all new Volvo C70, co-operation between Volvo Cars and Dynaudio® has entered a new, more intense phase. The Premium Sound speakers in the C70 are of a very high quality for a mass-produced car. One Dynaudio® speciality is the technology that helps produce an extremely clean sound.

It is certainly no exaggeration talk of concert hall quality when referring to the sound reproduction in the all new Volvo C70. It offers the best sound experience ever in a Volvo regardless of whether the roof is up or down. The sound quality in the new Volvo C70 convertible, makes your home audio equipment appear like a rather modest device for the simple reproduction of sound.

Music to enjoy
What you listen to, when and where you do it, is a very personal issue. The essential thing about the new C70 is that no matter what you choose to play, the sound system will do your choice optimum justice. Whether you prefer a string quartet, an Italian opera buffa, big band jazz or hip-hop, the quality of the sound makes you think you have the performers right there in your car.

Suggestions for music to play that is related to convertibles or just for getting in to the mood:
"Air" –  J. S. Bach
"The Flying Dutchman"  –  R. Wagner (and think of the C70's designer, Dutchman Fedde Talsma)
"Mr Blue Sky" –  Electric Light Orchestra
"Love is in the air"  –  John Paul Young
"Route 66"  –  Nat "King" Cole or Rolling Stones
"Diamonds on my windshield"  –  Tom Waits
"Fast car"  –  Tracy Chapman
"Every woman I know's crazy 'bout an automobile"  –  Billy "The Kid" Emerson
