Electrification

Electrification

For Volvo Cars, electrification is the future and we are committed to entering a new era that goes beyond the internal combustion engine. That is why in the summer of 2017, we were the first traditional car maker to commit to all-out electrification. From 2019, every new Volvo will come with an electric motor, phasing out cars only powered by an internal combustion engine. Mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids will be available as transition options on the road to fully electric cars. By 2025, we aim for half of all new cars sold globally to be fully electric.

Our electrification strategy also means that we will no longer develop a new generation of diesel engines and are phasing out diesels. The new Volvo S60 mid-size sedan, launched in the summer of 2018, was the first Volvo to be launched without a diesel engine.
