May 1, 2002 -- Broad strength across the model line and improving economic news helped power Volvo car sales ahead 23.9 per cent over the same month last year, Volvo Cars of Canada Ltd. announced. It is the best April sales tally since 1974.

Sales of 1,030 units in April 2002 surpassed the 831 units sold in the same month last year, and brings the year-to-date sales total to 2,975, an improvement of 14.6 per cent from the 2,595 sold in the same four month period of 2001.

Nearly every Volvo model enjoyed improved sales results in April from both the previous month and the same month last year.

The Volvo S60 continued to post impressive gains, up more than 53 per cent vs April of 2001.

"Our stake in the market for all-wheel-drive vehicles continues to grow, with Cross Country and S60 AWD both selling at a record pace," observed Paul Cummings, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars of Canada. "With S60 AWD sales in April at their highest point of the year, it's clear that customers value Volvo All Wheel Drive for more than winter security."

The steadily improving economic outlook will help to keep retail traffic strong into the summer months, Cummings predicted.
