Volvo Partners with the Andy Pilgrim Foundation to Help Combat Distracted Driving Among Teens

Veteran racing pro Pilgrim informs new drivers how to maintain safe practices behind the wheel

ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (March 9, 2011) - Volvo Cars of North America, LLC, (VCNA) has partnered with The Andy Pilgrim Foundation to fight distracted driving through a newly released educational DVD, "The Driving Zone 2."

The DVD addresses the pitfalls of texting, emailing and talking on the phone while driving.  It also highlights many useful tools used by professional and experienced drivers to enable them to stay collision-free.

"We took a public position on the need for distracted driving legislation when the Department of Transportation held its first Distracted Driving Summit in September 2009, but legislation isn't enough," said Geno Effler, VCNA's vice president of public affairs.  "People need to be made aware of the consequences of their actions behind the wheel, and take responsibility for those actions.  The most effective way to change behavior is through education, and that's why we've joined Andy on his mission to educate young drivers."

Pilgrim, a professional racecar driver with more than 25 years experience and five racing titles, has been speaking to students about driving safety for 16 years after witnessing a fatal collision involving a new driver.  He established the Andy Pilgrim Foundation in 2008 to further his mission to educate new drivers and raise awareness of the problems associated with distracted driving.

"I wanted to give back to the community by imparting the knowledge I've learned throughout my years of driving to young drivers, showing them how to create a safe driving environment and to try to prevent avoidable crashes," said Pilgrim.  "‘The Driving Zone 2' is a great tool for new drivers, as well as teachers and parents, who share a responsibility in shaping driving behaviors."

"The Driving Zone 2," available at http://www.andypilgrimfoundation.org/, completely replaces Pilgrim's first DVD, "The Driving Zone," which was released in 2004.  "The Driving Zone 2" has been adopted in Broward County, Florida as an official part of driver's education, and Pilgrim is currently in discussions with school districts throughout the country to add it to their curriculums.
