A new front-wheel-drive model joins Volvo's segment-defining XC70 crossover lineup for 2011. Building upon more than five decades of continuous improvement in the premium wagon sector, the new XC70 3.2 FWD effectively replaces the Volvo V70 that concluded its lengthy run at the end of the 2010 model year.

The major difference between the XC70 3.2 FWD and its AWD counterpart (available as a single $2,000 option on the 3.2) is the way that power is transferred to the ground. The former sends all torque exclusively to the front wheels. The latter is fitted with Volvo's signature All-Wheel Drive with Instant TractionTM for the best possible grip in all situations. Plus, standard Hill Descent Control (HDC) uses the vehicle's brakes and engine torque to crawl in bottom gear on steep downhill slopes.

Both models employ a refined 3.2-liter naturally aspirated 6-cylinder engine that now delivers 240 horsepower with ULEV II emissions rating or 230 horsepower with PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) rating. All XC70s are fitted with a six-speed "Geartronic" automatic transmission that enables the driver to shift manually when desired.

The flagship XC70 T6 AWD receives a substantial increase in power and torque for 2011. The 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine now delivers 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque, for net gains of 19 hp and 30 lb.-ft. respectively. Maximum torque is on tap from just 2,100 rpm and remains available all the way up the rev range, resulting in quick acceleration and smooth drivability. As a testament to its vim and vigor, the XC70 T6 AWD can sprint from 0-60 in just 6.9 seconds.

Minor trim and equipment changes for the XC70 include standard Sirius satellite radio on 3.2 models and a standard power glass moonroof on the T6 AWD. Option package contents have been realigned while the list of stand-alone options has been modified as well.

The Multimedia Package includes the outstanding Volvo Premium Sound system with a 650-watt amplifier, Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround Sound and 12 premium speakers plus the Volvo Navigation System with Real Time Traffic and Map Care. A rear park assist camera is a new addition to the package.

The available Technology Package builds on Volvo's heritage of innovation and safety. Volvo's preventative safety technologies focus on preventing driver distractions that studies show cause up to 90 percent of all traffic accidents. Based on this statistic, Volvo developed efficient technologies to help drivers avoid or reduce the severity of accidents caused by distraction and driver fatigue. The package includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Warning with Auto Brake (CWAB), Distance Alert (DA), Driver Alert Control (DAC) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Introduced on the XC70, a height-adjustable integrated booster cushion, standard on the T6 AWD and optional on 3.2 models, teams with an extended inflatable curtain. This combination provides the industry's best passenger safety system for precious cargo (your children) in the rear seat. A strong side structure uses high-tensile steel of different grades to optimize side-impact protection.

Cargo carrying flexibility is the XC70's forte. The luggage compartment floor is equipped with aluminum rails and movable storage points to secure the load. Side panels also have built-in load anchorage eyelets to keep luggage securely in place. In addition, they can be supplemented with multifunctional rails for a variety of hooks, load-anchoring nets, cargo space dividers and other load related accessories. For the ultimate in convenience for loading and unloading cargo, the XC70 offers a power tailgate as part of the Convenience Package.
