The 1990s - The decade of product, elegance, and transition. The early 1990s started with, "a dynamic car with four unique innovations," the Volvo 850GLT. New safety innovations continued to be developed, and Volvo was stepping out of its traditional shell ("boxy" design). This vehicle was the first step in a new industrial generation. Recognition for Volvo's safety was at an all time peak, winning prestigious awards round-the-clock. The mid 1990's gave way to the tag change for vehicles, introducing the S, V, C tags. The 1990's led the way for Volvo's great transition into the next generation of vehicles and safety.
