Four out of five adults say they don’t always use a seat belt when taking short trips or when in the backseat of a taxi or rideshare vehicle – that’s according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Together, Volvo Car USA, Uber, and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), want to change that by declaring November 14 National Seat Belt Day.
With a shared mission of encouraging people to always use a seatbelt, this day will serve as a yearly reminder of the importance of in-vehicle safety regardless of whether one is a driver or passenger.
“The safety belt is still among the most important safety features in the car today,” said, Jim Nichols, Product and Technology Communications Manager, Volvo Car USA. “We are proud that the three-point safety belt has endured over the years and is now featured in every vehicle sold.”
Launched by Volvo in 1959, the three-point safety belt also celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, making National Seat Belt Day particularly special and timely. Estimated to have saved more than one million lives since its introduction, the safety belt is considered one of the most important safety features ever invented. However, its effectiveness is only as good as its use; on National Seat Belt Day Volvo Cars and Uber ask that you remind everyone you know to buckle up.
Safety has been at the core of the Volvo brand since its introduction in 1927. Our founders, Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson said, “Cars are driven by people. The guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo, therefore, is and must remain, safety” and we are guided by that mission every day.
