For 2005 the Volvo S80 receives a number of significant enhancements. A new Sport Package for the 2.5T and 2.5T AWD includes the T6's sport seats, Geartronic 5-speed automatic transmission and the 17-inch "Interceptor" alloy wheels. All cars now come standard with fog lights and real burled walnut trim now graces the instrument panel (standard on T6, included in Premium Package on 2.5T and 2.5T AWD). Run-flat self-supporting tires are a stand-alone option on all S80 variants and one new color has been added: Magic Blue Metallic.

Later in 2005 (as a 2006 model), Volvo's new Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) will be available as an option. A digital camera that takes 25 pictures per second is installed on each door mirror. By comparing the pictures taken, the system can register when a vehicle is moving within the BLIS zone, which measures 31 feet long by 9.8 feet wide on either side of the car. The system is programmed to identify cars as well as motorcycles, in daylight as well as at night. Since BLIS is camera-based, however, it has the same limitations as the human eye does. This means the system will not function in conditions of poor visibility, for instance in fog or flying snow. In such a case, the driver receives a message that BLIS is not in action. It is also configured not to react to parked cars, road barriers, lampposts and other static objects.

The system is active at all speeds above 6.2 mph. It reacts to vehicles that are driven a maximum of 12 mph slower and a maximum of 43.5 mph faster than the car itself. If the driver chooses, BLIS can be switched off via a button in the center console.

The 2005 Volvo S80 sedan features an array of best-in-class safety innovations, including driver and front passenger dual-stage Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags, which work in harmony with the car's three-point seatbelts with pyrotechnic pretensioners. Additional safety features include standard Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) with side airbags and Inflatable Curtain (IC), Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS), seat belts with pyrotechnic pretensioners in all seating positions, plus Volvo's safety cage construction. These major features and myriad occupant safety details make S80 the industry standard for occupant protection.

The Volvo S80 received a Five Star/Five Star crash test rating from U.S. government agencies and a 'Best Pick' designation by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The S80 has won industry acclaim and contributed new designs and new technologies to the Volvo safety repertoire.
