Volvo maintains its impressive UK sales momentum in September

• Volvo's UK new car sales continued to climb in September, with 8,803 registrations

• Results show year-on-year growth of 18% for the high-flying Swedish car brand (44,348 sales), while Volvo's market share has increased by 21% in the first three quarters of 2019 compared with 2018

• Volvo's success outperforms the UK market, which has declined 3% year-to-date

• Volvo's best-selling UK models remain the multi-award-winning XC40 and XC60 SUVs

The critical September UK registration new car sales figures show Volvo continuing to prosper for a third consecutive quarter.

In September, the start of the '69' registration plate period, Volvo sold 8,803 new cars, an increase of 4% on the same month in 2018. This equates to a 2.56% market share for the month, and 2.38% for the year so far. Year-to-date, the Swedish brand has sold an impressive 44,348 cars, up 18% on the same period last year.

This performance over three consecutive quarters confirms the huge appeal of the company's all-new product line, and the excellent service delivered across its national retailer network.

Volvo's achievements are set against the backdrop of a subdued market in which new car sales have declined by 3% so far this year, and registered only a modest 1% increase in September compared to 2018.

The multi-award-winning XC40 compact SUV remains the most popular Volvo for new British car customers, with almost 12,000 units sold so far this year, while the larger XC60 SUV and the V40 hatchback take second and third spot respectively.

Making waves

Volvo is creating a stir in the market, introducing a succession of new models that are distinctively stylish, eminently practical and hugely desirable. It's also seizing the initiative in electrification, with plug-in hybrid versions now available for every car in its line-up.

The brand's sales success is mirrored by the wealth of prestigious awards it has garnered this year – 18 in total – including three major accolades at the News UK Motor Awards presented just this week, including Manufacturer of the Year.

Commenting on the company's continued success, Kristian Elvefors, Volvo Car UK Managing Director, said: "It is very rewarding to see how our revitalised product line-up is continuing to strike such a chord with British car buyers. Great products and the unstinting efforts of everyone in our retail network and UK team are delivering excellent results, but we take nothing for granted in a fiercely competitive marketplace. This is why it is important to keep a spirit of innovation, both in our products and the way we do business, including a real focus on the customer."

The global picture

The Volvo success story is not just confined to the UK. In September, the brand sold 64,536 cars globally, up 6.5% compared with 2018. The brand's new car sales are up 7.4% overall in 2019, at 507,704, with Europe, China and the United States all reporting steady sales growth and consistently growing faster than the industry, thereby gaining market share across these regions.
