• Repeat victory for Volvo V40 in annual Co-op Insurance Safest Used Car Awards
• V40 with Driver Support Pack wins award for third consecutive year
• Premium five-door V40 family car praised for its advanced safety aids and crash test rating
The Volvo V40 has been crowned the Safest Used Car for Families for the third year in a row at the Co-op Insurance Safest Used Car Awards. The awards, which celebrate the safest used cars typically bought by families in the UK, are in partnership with vehicle safety experts Thatcham Research.
The Volvo V40 with Driver Support Pack was voted the overall winner – as it also was in 2016 and 2017 – based on analysis of a wide range of used family cars, all of which must have a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, CO2 emissions of 120g/km or lower, and be available on the second-hand market for £15,000 or less. The cars were then evaluated further on crash worthiness, including ratings for adult, child and pedestrian protection, and the availability of Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).
Not only does the Volvo V40 come with AEB as standard, it was the safest car tested by Euro NCAP when it was assessed in 2012, with an unprecedented safety assist score of 100%. It was also the first car in the world to be fitted with a pedestrian airbag to help protect pedestrians in an accident.
The Driver Support Pack adds a range of advanced safety aids, including pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control and technology to warn you if there's a vehicle in your blind spot or if your car accidentally starts to leave its lane.
Nick Ansley, Head of Motor Insurance at Co-op Insurance, said: "We wanted to create a clear list of the Top 10 Safest Used Cars for Families to enable families to make informed decisions when it comes to buying a used car. We're pleased that the Volvo V40 with the safety pack has topped the list once again, for the third year running, providing an affordable choice that will keep families safe."
Commenting on the award, Bruce Greenwood, Used Car Programme Manager for Volvo Car UK, said: "Winning this award for the third year in a row is a fantastic result for Volvo and is a testament to the safety credentials of the V40. Its collision-avoidance technology helps to protect people both inside and out of the car, while its superb crash test rating makes sure your family will be safe if a collision is unavoidable.
"Sales of Volvo Selekt Approved Used Cars have increased by more than 30% since the V40 first won the award three years ago, so it's fantastic that more and more customers are experiencing owning a V40 through Volvo Selekt. The scheme includes comprehensive warranty cover, roadside assistance and a full history check, which means you can be sure that buying the safest used car for families is as safe and hassle-free as possible."
