The Volvo S80 is a luxury car that offers distinctive Scandinavian design, innovative technology, a refined ride, spaciousness and comfort. The most luxurious and modern Volvo yet, S80 is an elegant premium-badge alternative to big-selling German executive cars and reinforces Volvo's leadership in safety, quality and environmental care. Yet it's also a car that offers high levels of driving enjoyment, thanks to extensive development on UK roads, powerful new engines and an advanced ‘active' chassis available.

The Volvo S80 is available with a wide range of power units, including a 3.2-litre straight-six cylinder (SI6) engine - designed by Volvo in Sweden and made in Bridgend, Wales. Other engines include a high-performance 315PS V8, used in a top-of-the-range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) version, a 2.5T (200PS) turbo five-cylinder petrol and two frugal five-cylinder, 2.4-litre turbodiesels - the 2.4D (163PS) and D5 (185PS). Entry level 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines were introduced in 2007 along with an environmentally friendly 2.0 and 2.5-litre Flexifuel units.

The Volvo S80 replaces the first-generation S80, which successfully launched a bold, new design direction for Volvo. The latest S80 is a strong evolution of that direction, and is unmistakably Scandinavian in style and functionality.

‘We're challenging the very best in the segment by offering refined Scandinavian luxury,' says Frederik Arp, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. ‘The all-new Volvo S80 has clean and elegant lines combined with intelligent functionality.'

Volvo expects that the greater range of engines, advanced ride and handling, distinctive Scandinavian design and its latest advances in safety technology will boost the S80's UK sales, especially in the corporate sector. About 70 per cent of customer of the S80 will be new to the Volvo marque.

The Volvo S80 is class leading in safety and personal security. Technical innovations include a Personal Car Communicator, which checks if the car is locked or unlocked, if the alarm has been activated, and can also sense if anyone is in the car uninvited. A Collision Warning with Auto Brake helps to avoid running into the car in front, while a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) registers if another vehicle is in the blind spot, alongside the car.

A Volvo world first for the S80 is the Clean Zone Interior Package that provides clean cabin air to the standards approved by the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association.

Design Concept

  • Distinctive and elegant Scandinavian design

  • Leaner, more assertive and sportier stance than first generation Volvo S80

  • Latest itineration of Volvo's distinctive, modern design language

The Volvo S80 is an entirely new car that expresses a more dynamic evolution of Volvo's exterior design language. It's more sweeping, more elegant, tighter surfaced, and has a leaner and more agile look.

Its overall length is identical to the first generation Volvo S80, though it's 27mm wider and 34mm taller. Wheelbase is extended by 45mm, and both front and rear track are also lengthened. These revised dimensions help give the Volvo S80 a more imposing stance and greater presence.

‘The Volvo S80 should express elegance, alertness and smooth movement,' says Steve Mattin, Design Director of Volvo Cars. ‘We aimed to achieve this with more rounded shapes, higher haunches and more sweeping lines.'

The tapered shape with the gently rounded front, sloping glass, almost invisible transfer from rear window to boot panel and the abruptly vertical tail, all create a sensation of speed. This has been further emphasised by the parallel profiles on the bonnet and the sweeping roofline. The elegant flowing lines are also aided by the slimmer A- and C-posts. The narrower A-posts also have a primary safety benefit, reducing the visibility ‘dead zone' in front of the driver. The entire side-glass panel is also framed by a chromed trim moulding, to give extra elegance.

‘The Volvo S80 may be new car from the ground up but it is important that it should easily be identified as a Volvo,' says Steve Mattin. ‘That is why we have emphasised many of those elements that help create the special Volvo character.'

Like all the latest, modern Volvo designs, the Volvo S80 features pronounced curvature at the front corners to create a more compact and dynamic impression as well as reducing the risk of injuries to pedestrians. For the all new Volvo S80, the entire front is gently rounded without any pronounced edges, with headlamps set lower than the previous model S80. They follow the curvature of the front end to look ‘a bit like a smile,' says Steve Mattin. ‘It helps give the car a more positive expression.'

The shaped tail lamps echo the design of the other cars in today's Volvo range, but their profile has been refined to create a lower profile that follows the S80's broad, protective shoulder line. Those wide, curved shoulders gives real solidity to the body, and reinforce the image of the car having a robust safety cage, for excellent protection. LED lights at the top of the lamp units make it easy to identify the curved rear lights of the all-new Volvo S80 from a long way behind, especially in the dark.

The doors are also more rounded with a more powerful convex profile, instead of the previous concave design. The sills are also more pronounced, which visually lowers the car to give it a stable, more-assured stance.

Driving Dynamics: Engines

  • First V8-powered saloon in Volvo history. 4.4-litre, 315PS with AWD

  • A 238PS, 3.2-litre, six-cylinder, in-line petrol engine (SI6) offers superb smoothness and performance, while a four-cylinder 2-litre petrol unit provides an entry level engine

  • SI6 engine made in Britain, in Bridgend, Wales

  • Five-cylinder, 2.5T, 200PS turbo petrol engine

  • Choice of three diesel engines: four-cylinder 2.0D (136PS), 2.4D (163PS) and D5 (185PS)

  • 2.0 and 2.5-litre FlexiFuel units available

The Volvo S80 is the best handling, most agile, and best-performing big Volvo saloon ever. New engines include the most compact V8 petrol engine in the world and a new British-built in-line, 3.2-litre, six-cylinder petrol engine. Volvo's renowned five-cylinder common-rail diesel engines produce excellent fuel economy and performance.

First V8 Volvo saloon

The S80 is the first Volvo saloon ever to use a V8 engine. This unique power unit, also used in the Volvo XC90, is extraordinarily compact, with a close angle between the cylinder banks of just 60 degrees. This compactness allows it to be installed transversely under the bonnet of the S80, conferring substantial safety advantages. It also improves packaging, and is one reason why the Volvo S80 is so roomy.

The left-hand bank of cylinders is also offset slightly relative to the right bank - the opposite of normal V8 design. This has enabled the unit to be designed exactly to match the front-end collision protection structure.

The counter-rotating balancer shaft between the banks makes this engine one of the world's smoothest running V8s.

The 4.4-litre V8 engine is immensely powerful, with a maximum of 315 PS and no less than 440 Nm of torque at 3950rpm. They jointly satisfy the needs of particularly enthusiastic driving or effortless motorway cruising. There's a massive 370 Nm of torque available around 2000 rpm - the most common rev range in everyday driving. Variable camshaft timing as well as a variable intake system improves both fuel economy and the spread of torque.

Top speed of the V8 AWD Volvo S80 is 155mph, and with the standard Geartronic transmission 0-60 mph acceleration takes just 6.0 seconds and achieves 34.0mpg and 23.7mpg on the extra-urban and combined cycles.

‘This powerful V8 means we can reach out to the most discerning of customers,' says Derek Crabb, Vice President of Powertrain at Volvo Cars. ‘In the prestige class, there are many buyers who would never consider any other engine alternative.'

Furthermore, this is one of the cleanest and most economical V8 engines on the market with CO2 emissions of 284 g/km.

3.2-litre straight-six engine (SI6)

Volvo also introduced a highly efficient straight-six engine in the Volvo S80, the SI6 (for short in-line 6). Designed by Volvo in Sweden but built in Bridgend, Wales, the SI6 is both powerful and amazingly compact.

This 3.2-litre petrol unit produces 238 PS and maximum torque is 320 Nm at 3200rpm. These are increases of 31 kW and 40 Nm respectively over the outgoing 2.9-litre six-cylinder Volvo engine, used in the previous Volvo S80. A straight-six engine is, intrinsically, the most refined and smoothest of all engine configurations. But their length makes them difficult to package transversely. Most straight-six engines would not fit into a car's engine bay crossways; they're too long. Volvo engineers overcame this problem by making the new SI6 engine extremely compact, and much shorter than the straight-six norm.

The key was a new, unique and highly innovative drive system' known as READ - Rear End Ancillary Drive. All ancillaries, such as power steering pump and air conditioning compressor, are driven by gears at the rear end of the crankshaft. The alternator is direct driven and installed on the engine block. The flywheel damper is now inside the engine.

The result is an extremely short engine, of just 625 mm, or only 3mm longer than Volvo's five-cylinder engine. This substantially increases engine bay space, so the straight-six can be fitted crossways and the excellent crash structure can be configured around it. The shorter engine also improves the car's turning circle, just 11.2 metres.

The SI6 has aluminium block and head and both are structurally optimised to balance low weight and stiffness. Even the camshaft cover is structural, allowing it to incorporate the camshaft bearing caps for further weight reduction.

There are twin overhead camshafts and 24-valves (four per cylinder) to provide optimal engine breathing. Engine breathing is further improved by Volvo's patented Cam Profile Switching (CPS) system that features two completely different intake cam profiles machined onto the same camshaft. The engine management system decides which cam profile to use, depending on the engine's running conditions and driver's torque demands. One profile is ideal for low speed/low load driving and offers good torque and excellent fuel economy. The other, which gives longer valve lift, is ideal for enthusiastic driving, at higher speeds. An ingenious two-piece hydraulic valve tappet arrangement alters the cam profiles.

‘In principle, Cam Profile Switching creates two engines in one,' says Derek Crabb. ‘We can unite widely differing demands on one and the same engine and easily meet the requirements of customers with entirely different wishes. Our focus is just as much on satisfying customers who prioritise performance as those who are more interested in driving comfort and fuel economy.'

The SI6 engine also features a continuously Variable Cam Timing (VCT) system, to constantly alter valve overlap to achieve optimum power, efficiency and emissions. The combination of CPS and VCT gives the new straight-six engine an astonishingly broad power and torque band, and improves both outright performance and the vehicle's driveability.

In addition, the Variable Intake System (VIS) - which varies both intake tract length and, more unusually, plenum volume, through two throttle flap valves - boosts low-end torque and high-end power, further helping the breathing capability of this astonishing engine. For instance, 80 percent of the vehicle's maximum torque is available across the entire rev range, and 256 Nm is on tap all the way from 1400rpm to 6400rpm.

‘VIS enables us to exploit the engine's capacity to the maximum and extract the maximum possible power throughout the entire rev range,' says Derek Crabb.

Maximum speed of the new SI6-equipped S80 is 149mph. It is available with a six-speed Geartronic transmission and accelerates from 0-60mph in just 7.4 seconds and achieves 39.2mpg and 27.4mpg on the Extra-urban and Combined cycles, with CO2 emissions of 246 g/km.

The SI6 engine is also amazingly clean, complying with Euro5 emission control standards, and ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) II standards in the US.

Five-cylinder turbo petrol (2.5T) and diesel units (2.4D and D5)

The 2.5T is Volvo's familiar and popular light-pressure turbo five-cylinder engine. This smooth, refined engine has a power output of 200 PS, with 300 Nm of torque.

Like the new SI6 engine, this is an extremely compact unit, partly because the turbocharger has been integrated into the exhaust manifold. Top speed is 146 mph, and 0-60 mph acceleration takes 7.2 seconds, with fuel economy of 41.5mpg and 30.4mpg on the extra-urban and combined cycles and CO2 emissions of 223 g/km.

There are two versions of Volvo's 2.4-litre, five-cylinder common-rail diesel engine available for the all-new Volvo S80 - the 2.4D with 163PS, 340Nm of torque from 1750-2750rpm and 0-60mph in9.0 seconds, plus the D5 with 185PS, 400Nm of torque from 2000-2750rpm and 0-60mph possible in 8.0 seconds. Both engines deliver excellent fuel economy with 53.3mpg and 44.1mpg for the 2.4D on the extra-urban and combined cycles, and 53.3mpg and 44.1mpg respectively for the D5.

Both these turbodiesel engines were substantially revised and enhanced in 2005 following technological developments and extensive changes to the performance characteristics. For example, these included:

  • New electronic glow plug system for faster starting.

  • More advanced injection process with 7 spray holes instead of 5 in each injector for complete fuel atomization and more efficient combustion and enhanced performance.

  • New, larger and more efficient turbocharger with electronic control for faster/more precise control of charge pressure; plus larger compressor wheel, new cambered vanes for improved response at all speeds and reduced turbo lag.

  • Turbo centre housing now water cooled to provide continued cooling after engine stops.

  • Improved flow of air/exhaust gases for optimal flow and reduced drop of pressure.

  • More powerful engine management system with more sensors to improve regulation.

  • EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system modified for improved flow/regulation.

  • New, more effective cooling system for EGR.

  • Faster, electronically controlled throttle moves EGR gases/regulates temperature better.

  • Air swirl in combustion chamber is now infinitely variable for more efficient combustion.

  • Increased volume for combustion chambers and consequently a lower compression ratio.

  • Larger catalytic converter with oxygen sensor for more precise emissions control.

  • NOx emissions reduced by 50 per cent.

  • Maintenance free, coated diesel particulate filter (Euro IV compliant) automatically burns off soot particulates - approximately every 500 miles.

Low emissions superior to Euro IV control standard requirements:

   Euro IV requirement  D5 (S80)
 CO (carbon monoxide)  0.500 g/km           0.175 g/km (65% better)
 NOx (nitrogen oxide)  0.250 g/km  0.182 g/km (27% better)
 Particulates  0.025 g/km  0.001 g/km (96% better)

The 2.4D and D5 are now some of the cleanest and most advanced diesel engines in the world. The improvements have resulted in an entirely new driving experience with considerably higher performance and improved drivability. At the same time, there has been a sharp reduction in emissions.  A particle filter requiring no service is fitted as standard, making the engine a very environmentally efficient alternative.

The D5 version of the new diesel engine produces 185PS and a massive 400 NM of torque across a very wide rev range. ‘It will be perceived as a lively petrol engine, only more powerful and more environmentally efficient,' says Derek Crabb. Maximum speed of the D5-powered S80 is 143mph and 0-60 mph takes only 8.0 seconds in manual guise, outstanding for a big diesel saloon. Yet average fuel economy on the official combined cycle is 44.1 mpg.

New 2.0-litre diesel and petrol engines

The Volvo S80 is also offered with a choice of diesel or petrol four-cylinder engines. Like all the other engines, they are transversely mounted.

‘More buyers than ever are focusing on fuel economy and it's important to give them more choice,' says Lex Kerssemakers, senior vice president of brand, business and product strategy at Volvo. ‘The 2.0-litre alternatives give a very attractive combination of good fuel economy and driving pleasure.'

The four-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbodiesel has a lively 136PS and a massive 320Nm of torque (the same as the normally aspirated six-cylinder engine and more than the 2.5T). This high-technology, eco-friendly engine uses second-generation common-rail diesel technology and is fitted with a maintenance-free, regenerating diesel particulate filter. Top speed is 124mph 0-60mph acceleration takes 10.4 seconds and, most pleasingly of all, combined fuel consumption is a frugal 49.6mpg.

The 2.0-litre petrol unit features state-of-the-art four-valve technology, double overhead camshafts, lightweight aluminium construction and modern electronic fuel injection. This entry-level engine produces 145PS and 190Nm of torque and punts the S80 to a top speed of 127mph. Acceleration from 0-60mph takes 11.0 seconds and official combined fuel economy is 34.0mpg.

FlexiFuel engines dramatically cut CO2 emissions

Volvo now offers the broadest range of biofuel-powered vehicles in the UK. The latest to join the Volvo biofuel range is the 2.0F four-cylinder and a 2.5F five-cylinder.

‘Volvo has a long-standing commitment to environmental protection,' says Lex Kerssemakers, senior vice president of brand, business and product strategy at Volvo. ‘We believe FlexiFuel vehicles have considerable potential to cut total CO2 emissions and we are committed to their development.'

The FlexiFuel engines run on E85 - a blend of 85 percent plant-derived sustainable ethanol and 15 percent petrol. Vehicles that run on E85 produce about 80 percent less CO2 than conventional petrol power owing to the carbon absorbed during the growing process. Plants typically used for E85 include corn, wheat and sugar beet.

Running a FlexiFuel Volvo is easy. If E85 is not available, the S80 can easily use conventional unleaded petrol. The car's advanced electronics automatically recognise what sort of fuel is being used and adjust the engine's tune accordingly. No special action is necessary by the driver.

The 2.0F engine is based closely on the normal 2.0-litre S80 unit and develops identical power - 145PS and 185Nm of torque. The 2.5F is based on the petrol 2.5T, offering the same 200PS and 300Nm of torque.

The FlexiFuel engines drive almost identically to their petrol equivalents. The fuel hoses, valves and gaskets are modified to compensate for the more corrosive properties of ethanol, while the injection valves are larger and reinforced, as more fuel must be injected into the engine - E85 has a lower energy density than petrol.

The availability of E85 is growing quickly in the UK and experts predict this to improve still further as government policy encourages its use.

Six-speed automatic or manual gearboxes

The five-cylinder diesel and petrol engines are offered with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed Geartronic gearboxes. Geartronic allows a driver to change gear manually, as well as enjoy full automatic transmission. Geartronic automatic transmissions are standard on the SI6 in-line six-cylinder engine, and on the V8 and an option on the 2.5T, 2.4D and D5.

The 2.0 petrol engine and 2.5F come with a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the 2.5T, 2.4D, D5 and 2.5F are available with a six-speed manual.

The V8 gets all-wheel drive with Instant TractionTM as standard, while all other models in the Volvo S80 range are front-wheel drive.

Driving Dynamics: Chassis

  • Innovative ‘active' Four-C chassis automatically adjusts suspension for optimal handling, control and comfort

  • Suspension tuned for demanding UK road conditions

  • All-Wheel-Drive standard on V8 model with Instant Traction and BorgWarner coupling for superior grip in slippery conditions and better handling balance

The Volvo S80 has been designed to offer superb handling and ride comfort, to appeal to both enthusiastic drivers as well as those who put priority on comfort and ease-of-driving. Like all Volvos, the handling is always predictable, stable and safe. Much of the car's development was undertaken on the UK's idiosyncratic roads, so it is specially tuned for British use.

Volvo's engineers started with a body of exceptional torsional rigidity, essential for safety and good driving characteristics. The suspension is fully independent, and uses front MacPherson struts and a rear multilink arrangement. Coil springs are used all round.

Active Four-C chassis

The SE Sport variant has Volvo's innovative Active Four-C chassis (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) as standard (optional on all other models).  The advanced electronics allow all of the car's dynamic systems to communicate and work in unison and has been specifically optimised for the variety of UK road conditions.

The car's speed, wheel movement and steering are continuously monitored via multiplexed control systems that update the suspension settings 500 times per second.  The advanced electronics allow the driver to choose between different suspension settings at the touch of a button on the dashboard for maximum driver choice, control and enjoyment. The system is designed to help counteract the car's natural dynamic tendencies:

  • TAKE-OFF: When accelerating away from a standing start, the rear dampers are set to maximum stiffness to help prevent acceleration squat and optimise front-wheel traction.

  • BRAKING: When braking, the front dampers are stiffened to reduce ‘brake dive'. This allows greater rear-end grip so more rear braking effort can be used.

  • CORNERING: When cornering, the outside dampers are stiffened to reduce roll and provide extra grip and traction.

This is an advanced self-adjusting chassis in which electronic sensors continually monitor the car's behaviour, and the dampers readjust in a fraction of a second. With Four-C, the car is always in its optimum setting, no matter whether the driving priority is comfort or high performance.

This technology also reduces the car's tendency to squat, dip or roll under firm acceleration, hard braking or fast steering manoeuvres. ‘The active chassis adds an extra dimension to driving pleasure,' says Silvia Güllsdorf, S80 Project Director at Volvo Cars. ‘The driving properties improve whatever the situation. Progress is both safer and more entertaining.'

The system has been further developed from the previous Volvo S80 model and now offers three chassis settings instead of the previous two. The driver simply presses a button to alter the car's personality to suit his or her personal tastes from the three settings available:

  • COMFORT makes for sedate progress with gentle, harmonious body movements.

  • SPORT provides more controlled body movements, faster steering response and added road contact.

  • ADVANCED minimises damper movement and maximises contact between the tyres and road surface - the setting for enthusiastic driving on smooth tarmac.

In an emergency situation, however, it makes no difference which alternative the driver has selected. Four-C always reacts to help the driver out of the situation - by automatically stabilising the car. Equally, if a driver has selected Comfort but starts to drive faster, the car's sensors will detect his or her change in behaviour and the car's suspension will be automatically adjusted.

AWD with Instant TractionTM for S80 V8

The handle the impressive power and torque of the new V8 engine, the flagship Volvo S80 V8 is equipped with All Wheel Drive (AWD) as standard. It offers better handling on slippery surfaces, such as snow or icy roads, and also avoids torque steer sometimes found in very powerful front-drive cars, so the car is always offering maximum traction and optimal handling.

Instant Traction, a Volvo patented system, switches power instantly from front to rear (or vice versa) to help start from very slippery or loose surfaces. The AWD system operates independently of driver input, distributing torque automatically between the front and rear wheels for the best possible grip in all conditions.

A ‘pre-charged' function uses a non-return valve within the coupling, making 80Nm of torque instantly available to the rear wheels if the sensors detect any slippage. It feeds more power to the rear wheels as the car pulls away to improve acceleration. Once moving, power is balanced between front and rear, reducing drive to the rear wheels when not needed, and reducing fuel consumption.

The intelligent AWD system uses a variety of sensors to monitor the road surface and the steering wheel, brake and accelerator pedal positions. In normal driving conditions on dry roads, almost all the power is distributed to the front wheels. However, for off-road work, or if the sensors detect slippage, torque is diverted to the rear wheels to maximise traction.

The Volvo S80 V8 AWD further benefits from Volvo's TRACS anti-spin system. TRACS prevents wheel spin by transferring power across the axle if it detects a wheel is losing grip on one side.

Other S80 models use front wheel drive, which offers predictable and safe handling, plus better traction, than rear-wheel drive.

Driving Dynamics: Steering, Brakes and Transmission

  • Speed dependent power steering makes parking easier yet improves high-speed feel

  • Collision Warning with Auto Brake and Distance Alert with adaptive cruise control

  • Electronic parking brake

  • Advanced braking system with FBS (Fading Brake Support), HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist), EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), RAB (Ready Alert Brakes), OHB (Optimised Hydraulic Brakes)

  • Dynamic Stability and Traction Control

  • Speed-dependent steering available

  • Five-speed manual transmission for 2.0 petrol and 2.0 Flexifuel and six-speed manual for 2.0D and 2.5F

  • Six-speed manual transmission for 2.5T petrol and 2.4D and D5 turbodiesel engines, with six-speed Geartronic transmission available

  • Six-speed Geartronic transmission standard on 3.2 and V8 engine models

  • Geartronic automatic transmission adapts its shift patterns to suit individual driving styles and includes a sequential, manual-shift facility for added control

The five-cylinder petrol and diesel engines (2.5T, 2.4D and D5) have a six-speed manual gearbox which can be upgraded to the six-speed Geartronic transmission which is standard on the 3.2 and V8 engines. The four cylinder engines come with a five-speed manual gearbox. Volvo's Geartronic automatically adjusts its shift points to reflect the driver's style and also offers a manual, sequential-shift facility where the driver is able to choose gears individually by tipping the lever forwards to change up and backwards to change down.

Steering is by direct rack and pinion steering, and power assistance is standard. Speed-dependent power steering is available. It provides extra power assistance at low speeds, for instance to make parking easier. The power assistance gradually declines as road speed increases, disappearing entirely at high cruising speeds.

To give all drivers their own optimum road feel, the level of steering servo assistance can now be adjusted via the car's information and set-up system. Power steering assistance can be set at one of three levels.

The DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) system (standard on all Volvos) increases driving safety on twisty roads and in slippery conditions by using sensors to detect if one of the driven wheels shows any sign of losing traction and cutting the power to it at lightning speed so it can quickly regain grip. And if the car shows any tendency to skid, the system automatically brakes the relevant wheels to help maintain smooth control.

Braking is by four big disc brakes. Front brakes are ventilated, for improved cooling, and latest-generation ABS brakes are standard.  An electric parking brake is standard, which automatically releases as the car moves off.

All S80 models have Volvo's latest advanced braking system with new functions, including:

  • FBS (Fading Brake Support) - uses hydraulics to gradually build up braking pressure during constant braking to help reduce the risk of wear and retained pedal feeling.

  • HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist) it updates Volvo's EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) and EBA (Emergency Brake Assist) by using hydraulics to increase braking pressure when the driver brakes hard.

  • RAB (Ready Alert Brakes) can predict if the accelerator is released quickly or if the adaptive cruise control registers an obstacle in front of the car and places the brake pads against the brake discs even before the driver hits the brake pedal.

  • OHB (Optimised Hydraulic Brakes) reinforces the braking capacity in conjunction with hard braking to compensate for low vacuum pressure in the brake servo.

Volvo's research shows that many rear-end accidents happen because the driver is distracted or fails to react in time, which is why Volvo has introduced a (optional) new ACC (adaptive Cruise Control) with Distance Alert and Collision Warning with Auto Brake technology to help avoid such incidents, or at least minimise their effects.

The system uses a radar system to continuously monitor the area in front of the car so that if it approaches another moving car and the driver does not react it triggers an audible signal and a red warning light flashes on the windscreen.

Interior Design

  • Inviting, spacious and elegant cabin

  • Simple but distinctive Scandinavian architecture using premium materials

  • Ultra-slim ‘floating' centre console contains most controls and simplifies cabin design

  • Superbly comfortable seats can include ventilation as well as heating

  • Rear seats can also be heated

Scandinavia is famous for its innovative interior designs, and the Volvo S80 epitomises elegant Scandinavian luxury. The cabin is simple, functional, elegant, and combines aesthetics and technology in a warm and intelligent way.

‘Our cabins are far more inviting, stylish and friendlier than typical German prestige car interiors,' says Steve Mattin, Design Director at Volvo Cars. Surfacing is clean, and there are noticeable colour contrasts. The architecture is simple. Rectangular, slightly elliptical shapes are a recurring theme. Premium materials are used extensively, including leather, wood, aluminium and a stainless steel door sill trim which has built in illumination that comes on when the door is opened and harmonises with the rest of the interior lighting.

One of the most elegant pieces of interior design is the modern, ultra-slim centre console, similar to the revolutionary design first introduced in its compact Volvo S40 saloon. The handsome console, which appears to float, contains most of the important switches and controls and contributes to the understated, simple interior design, without a plethora of confusing switchgear. The console stretches back to the rear seat and hosts a number of smart functions for storing and connecting accessories, such as an i-Pod.

Comfort was an absolute priority in Volvo's most luxurious car yet. The Volvo S80 is roomier than the outgoing vehicle - legroom is improved both front and rear, and shoulder and head room are also enhanced. The result is that the all-new Volvo S80 is one of the most spacious vehicles in the luxury car class.

Volvo has an excellent reputation for seating comfort. The seats on the Volvo S80 are redesigned for even greater comfort, while the electrically operated front seats can be upholstered in perforated, heated and ventilated leather. Front seat ventilation is supplied by the car's air conditioning system, and the air flows through the upholstery and seat cushion, reducing any stickiness caused by warm weather. The system also heats the front seats, for chilly days. Heated rear seats are also now available.

  • Three-year/60,000-mileage warranty package (whichever is first)

Scandinavia is famous for its innovative interior designs, and the Volvo S80 epitomises elegant Scandinavian luxury and quality. The cabin is simple, functional, elegant, and combines aesthetics and technology in a warm and intelligent way.

‘Our cabins are far more inviting and friendlier than typical German prestige car interiors,' says Steve Mattin, Design Director at Volvo Cars. Surfacing is clean, and there are noticeable colour contrasts. The architecture is simple. Premium materials are used extensively, including leather, wood, aluminium and the availability of stainless steel door sill trim.

One of the most elegant pieces of interior design is the modern, ultra-slim centre console, similar to the revolutionary design first introduced in the compact Volvo S40 saloon. The handsome console, which appears to float, contains most of the important switches and controls and contributes to the understated, simple interior design, without a plethora of confusing switchgear. The console stretches back to the rear seat and hosts a number of smart functions for storing and connecting accessories such as an i-Pod.

In line with Volvo's commitment to quality and the environment, all interior trim materials conform to the internationally recognised, ecological Oeko-Tex standard, and are emissions-free to reduce allergic reactions and skin conditions (see Environment).

The Volvo S80 goes one step further by offering an optional Clean Zone Interior Package (CZIP) that provides clean cabin air to standards approved by the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association. Volvo's new Clean Zone Interior Package (CZIP) features an automatic air purging system. When the car is unlocked by the remote control, the passenger compartment is automatically ventilated for about one minute if the outside air temperature is above 10 degrees C. Carefully selected trim materials, which minimise emissions of harmful substances, further helps provide cabin air approved by the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association.

Volvos typically come much better equipped than rival German prestige cars and have their own distinctive Scandinavian design, and the Volvo S80 is no exception.

The Volvo S80 is available in four trim levels: SE, SE Sport, SE Lux and Executive:

SE

The SE has Sundby Textile/T-Tec upholstery, electrically controlled driver's seat, 17in alloy wheels, a High Performance eight-speaker audio system with 160-watt output and 1xCD, plus automatic sensing wipers, Cruise Control and autodimming rear view mirror. It is also distinguished by colour co-ordinated front spoiler and side mouldings.

SE Sport

The SE Sport combines the luxury features of the SE with Sports styling and handling enhancements and leather-faced upholstery. It gains speed dependent power steering, ventilated and heated powered front seats with seven cooling and heating settings, and Volvo's active Four-C chassis system. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are standard.

SE Lux

The SE Lux model has leather-faced upholstery, heated and powered front seats, rear park assist, Active Bending headlamps, and walnut wood cabin trim.

Executive

On the range-topping Executive model, the seats and door panels are offered in exclusive soft Executive ventilated leather upholstery with massage function and door inserts including extra padded front armrests with four unique colour combinations. The ultimate Dynaudio Premium Sound Audio System and RTI satellite navigation are also standard, as is a fridge in the rear seat with glasses. Externally, the Executive model is distinguished by uniquely coloured grille and chrome sections on the front air intakes and around the fog lights, plus 18 inch alloy wheels.

Audio systems

Volvo has its own team of audio experts and has a well deserved reputation for high quality audio systems. The all-new Volvo S80 has been designed to offer the best sound experience in the class. Performance, High Performance and the ultimate Dynaudio Premium Sound Audio Systems are offered.

The top-of-the-range Dynaudio Premium Sound Audio System, one of the very best in the automotive world which uses an Alpine digital amplifier, Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround and 12 speakers from renowned Danish speaker manufacturer Dynaudio. Thanks to the digital amplifier, the sound automatically adjusts to compensate for outside noise influences. Volume and tone both adjust. The amplifier has a very high damping factor, thanks to the ICEPower technology from Danish hi-fi experts Bang & Olufsen.  This system contributes to the clear and powerful sound all the way down to the deepest bass notes.

‘Both Volvo and Dynaudio share the same uncompromising attitude to audio quality,' explains Silvia Güllsdorf. ‘Together we have acquired in-depth knowledge about sound inside the car. The result is truly high-class audio reproduction. That is why we're also placing the Dynaudio logotype on the instrument panel of the S80 - it represents a crowning achievement for both our companies.'

The front doors have well-dimensioned three-way loudspeakers. The rear doors feature two-way loudspeakers with a tweeter and a mid/woofer. The tweeter diaphragm is made of textile (known as a silk dome tweeter), a Dynaudio speciality that helps create more crystal-clear sound. Each loudspeaker has a passive crossover filter to provide a harmonious total sound experience with the best possible bandwidth and dynamics.

A specially developed centre loudspeaker in the instrument panel works together with the door loudspeakers to create a natural, homogeneous sound. ‘We are very proud of the audio experience we can offer in the all new Volvo S80,' says Silvia Güllsdorf. ‘It's easy to forget that you're actually in a car, and not in a concert hall.'

The other two sound systems available in the S80 also offer superb audio quality. The ‘Performance' system, standard in the S model, has a 4X20 watt amplifier and six speakers, while the High Performance, standard on other models gets six-stack CD player, a 4X40 watt amplifier and eight speakers.

All sound systems feature an extra input for connection to portable MP3 players, enabling them to be mated to the car's audio system.

Bluetooth, the advanced wireless system, enables your mobile phone to be connected to the car's loudspeaker system. This allows for perfect sound and minimises the interference often experienced when a mobile is used while driving.

Volvo's RTI (Road and Traffic Information) navigation system has a faster processor, which means alternative routes are plotted faster than before, and there is more detailed information, including local speed limits when a national border is crossed. Several new countries have been added, mostly in Eastern Europe.

The Volvo S80 driver can tailor the car's comfort features to his or her own needs and tastes. These parameters are set in the car's information system. The menu covers features such as the seats, rear-view mirrors, climate unit, audio system, navigation and, to a certain extent, the car's driving properties too.

Rear seat DVD

The Volvo S80 can be fitted with an advanced rear seat entertainment (RSE) system. An integrated DVD player, eight-inch flat-screen monitors built into the front seat headrests, wireless headphones and remote control are all included. An extra socket means it is possible to connect an additional DVD player or video game. The two screens can then be used independently. Introduced in May 2008, a Digital TV option is also available to supplement the RSE system. This new option enables passengers to watch Freeview channels as well as providing a card slot that can be used for subscription services like SKY.

One new choice is automatic start of the rear defroster. When this function is pre-selected, the defroster is activated whenever the temperature is about 9 degrees Celsius.

Volvo owners can personalise their car by choosing options. Many are conveniently grouped together, such as the Winter, Communications and new Active Bending Light Packs:

  • Winter pack: heated front seats, headlamp cleaning system, luxury floor mats and heated washer nozzles.

  • Communications pack: RTI navigation system with RDS-TMC, remote control, European DVD maps, PCC (Personal Car Communicator) with Heartbeat sensor and Keyless Drive and Bluetooth® handsfree system.

  • Driver Support pack (not available on 2.0, 2.0D, 2.0F, 2.5T and 2.5F): BLIS (blind Spot Information System), ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) with Distance Alert and Collision Warning with Auto Brake and LDW (Lane Departure Warning) and DAC (Driver Alert Control).

  • Security pack: PCC (Personal Car Communicator) with Heartbeat Sensor and Keyless Drive, 360o Laminated Windows including cargo area (front side windows are water repellent) and TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System).

Volvo's RTI (Road and Traffic Information) satellite navigation system features RDS-TMC (Traffic Message Channel) which displays up-to-date information on traffic problems. It has a large colour screen that rises from the top of the dashboard to be safely positioned in the driver's view. This is linked to a map system that displays information for most of Europe, and shows any traffic problem areas by a set of red or yellow symbols to indicate the severity of any congestion. Controls on the steering wheel make it easy for the driver to use the system, which can display information on the traffic areas highlighted; alternatively, there's a remote control unit for passengers to use.

Volvo On Call - advanced telematics

Volvo On Call is a valuable personal safety feature using advanced telematics. The system uses an integrated GSM telephone with a built-in GPS unit for satellite positioning, and ensures help is always close at hand.

Volvo On Call - safety package

Volvo On Call comes with a standard safety package. If an airbag or seatbelt pre-tensioner is triggered in the event of an accident, Volvo On Call automatically calls the Emergency Services via BT999 and can also provide data of your location.  Alternatively, pressing the red ‘SOS' button on the integrated GSM telephone will put you straight through to the Emergency Services.

Also, if the car breaks down or you need help, pressing the Volvo On Call button will put you straight through to a Volvo On Call operator who is only a call away at any time of day to offer personal services such as route guidance, or to guide roadside assistance to you.

Volvo On Call - security package

An optional Volvo On Call security package offers the added benefits of a remote door unlock facility, theft notification and vehicle tracking.

In the future, Volvo On Call's services could include automatically contacting your local dealer when a service is required.

Quality and customer satisfaction

Volvo's employees are justifiably proud of the quality of their products, but they're equally determined to offer the best customer service. Volvo's management has set a goal of achieving ‘Customer satisfaction no. 1' in the premium sector. To fulfil this ambitious target, the company has initiated a series of Quality Forums, which scrutinise information from a combination of internal and external sources, including independent rankings by companies such as JD Power. Having analysed the data, the Forums initiate action plans to improve performance in specific areas.

Warranty

This quality assurance package is backed up by a comprehensive warranty. The standard mechanical warranty is three years/60,000 miles, there's a three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty on the paintwork and either eight or 12 years' cover against rust perforation. In addition, all Volvos are covered by one year's free RAC cover, which provides full breakdown and recovery assistance, anywhere in Europe, 24 hours a day.

Volvo is a renowned world leader in automotive safety, and the all-new Volvo S80 features a new generation of preventive and protective safety systems.

The best way to protect the car occupants is to avoid accidents. This was one of the most important starting points when Volvo started work on the all-new Volvo S80. To achieve the company's safety objectives, an entirely new generation of advanced driving and support systems was developed, some of which have been previewed on concept cars.

‘The basic principle for our preventive safety systems is that they should not take over the driving or the driver's responsibility,' says Silvia Güllsdorf, Volvo S80 Project Director. ‘The aim is to help the driver to make the correct decision in difficult situations by issuing a warning and then indicate how to deal with the situation.'

Adaptive Cruise Control with Distance Alert and Collision Warning with Auto Brake

The new ACC (adaptive Cruise Control) with Distance Alert and Collision Warning with Auto Brake technology is available as an option on the Volvo S80 and was unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motorshow and addresses the problem of rear-end impacts.  The ACC and Distance Alert help the driver maintain a steady distance to the vehicle in front, while the Collision Warning and Auto Brake can automatically activate the brakes when a rear-end collision is imminent.

The new Collision Warning with Auto Brake enhances the Collision Warning with Brake Support that was introduced in 2006 and uses both radar and a camera to detect vehicles in front of the car. The radar has a range of 150 metres while the camera range is 55 metres. By combining the information from both the radar and camera the system becomes more efficient and with statistics showing that 50 percent of rear-end impacts involve a stationary object, the system can also detect stationary vehicles.  The warning system can be adapted to match individual driving styles and conditions and can be changed in the car settings menu with a choice of three sensitivity options.

The system begins when the car is approaching another vehicle from behind and the driver does not react. To alert the driver a red warning light flashes in the head-up display on the windscreen and an audible signal can be heard. In many cases this gives the driver enough time to react and an accident can be avoided.  If the risk of collision increases despite the warning, the brake support is activated. This shortens the reaction time by preparing the brakes by placing the brake pads against the discs. The brake pressure is also reinforced hydraulically, ensuring effective braking even if the driver doesn't press the brake pedal particularly hard.

If the driver still doesn't brake and the sensor system determines that a collision is going to happen, the brakes are activated automatically. Auto Brake is designed to lower the impact speed as much as possible and thereby reduce the risk of injury to the occupants of both vehicles. For example a reduction in speed from 37mph to 31mph gives approximately 30 percent less impact energy, this can mean the difference between a serious and minor injury. In some cases it can help avoid the impact completely.

To help maintain relaxed driving control Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is also included within this option; this system maintains a steady distance between the car in front even when traffic flow is uneven. By using radar sensors to continuously measure the distance to the vehicle in front, the system automatically adapts the speed of the car to ensure that the distance is maintained. Adaptive Cruise Control handles part of the routine driving functions so the driver can focus on what's going on further ahead. There is a choice of five different time intervals ranging between 1 and 2.6 seconds.

Distance Alert (DA) is the final feature included in this option. The system helps the driver maintain a safe distance to the vehicle in front even when Adaptive Cruise Control is not in use. Activated via a button on the centre console, the driver can choose between five settings, similar to that of the ACC. If the time gap to the car in front gets shorter than the selected speed, the driver gets visual information in the head-up display on the lower section of the windscreen.

The availability of these systems depends on the number and quality of visible road markings. Poor light, fog, snow and extreme weather conditions can make the system unavailable.

Driver Alert Control and Lane Departure Warning

Driver Alert Control (DAC) as well as a Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system were also unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show in September and are now available as an option on the Volvo S80.

"Real life safety is the key to our safety philosophy. When it comes to preventative safety, we have the same approach as when we develop protective systems. In other words our research and technical developments focus on areas where new technology can create significant results in real-life-traffic," says Thomas Broberg, Director of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre.

Rather than monitoring human behavior (which varies from one person to another) DAC monitors the progress of the car on the road.  Monitoring driving behavior is more reliable as it assesses the impact that fatigue or distraction has on the car's movements and assesses whether it's being driven in a controlled, consistent manner.  This also means that DAC covers a wider range of situations, such as when the driver is focusing too much attention on a mobile phone conversation or distraction by passengers in the car.

This system consists of a camera located between the windscreen and the interior rear view mirror, a number of sensors and a control unit.  The camera measures the distance between the car and the road lane markings, while the sensors register the car's movements. This information is sent to the control unit which then calculates whether the driver is at risk of losing control of the car.

If the risk is assessed as high, the driver is alerted via an audible signal, while a text message and coffee cup symbol appear in the car's information display to urge the driver to take a break. The driver has the opportunity to access driving information throughout a journey, the starting point is five bars and the less consistent the driving, the fewer bars remain.

"It is, of course, always the driver's responsibility to take a break when necessary, but sometimes you might not realise that you're not alert enough to drive. In such situations, Driver Alert Control can help the driver make the right decision before the concentration level becomes too low," concludes Daniel Levin, project manager for Driver Alert Control at Volvo Cars.

LDW uses the camera located between the windscreen and the rear view mirror and monitors the car's position between the road markings. The system is activated via a button on the centre console and gives a gentle warning sound if the car crosses one of the road markings without reason such as if the indicator hasn't been used.

Both the Driver Alert Control and Lane Departure Warning are activated when the car reaches 40mph and they will stay active as long as the speed exceeds 37mph. The availability of these systems depends on the number and quality of visible road markings. The lane markings must be clearly visible and poor light, fog, snow and extreme weather conditions can make the system unavailable.

Blind Spot Information System makes lane changing safer

The Volvo S80 is also equipped with BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) and IDIS (Intelligent Driver Information System). With the aid of cameras beside the door mirrors, BLIS registers if another vehicle is in the blind spot alongside the car. The warning light beside the mirror is then activated.

IDIS

IDIS (Intelligent Driver Information System) is an electronic information system that avoids the driver being distracted by unimportant information in testing driving situations. By continuously checking certain functions in the car - such as steering wheel movements, movement of the accelerator pedal, indicator control and braking - IDIS can assess the complexity of the situation and delay any information that is not crucial to safety, such as an incoming telephone call or a text message.

Active Bending headlights ‘see around corners'

To improve visibility when driving in the dark on winding roads, Volvo has launched the Active Bending Light - swivelling headlights that follow the bends in the road. The headlights can be swivelled by up to 15 degrees in each direction, totalling 30 degrees, and thus have the capacity to illuminate a longer distance when the road is winding. To save wear on the system, this function is disconnected automatically in daylight. To help reduce the risk of blinding oncoming road users, the angle of the headlights is adjusted depending on how heavily the car is loaded or if it is accelerating or braking.

The headlights are cleaned by means of an electro-mechanical, high-pressure system that washes one headlight at a time, always offering the best possible light.

Highly advanced braking system

The Volvo S80 has a highly advanced braking system with several new functions that interact to ensure the shortest possible braking distance.

Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) is a new generation of Volvo's panic brake assistant. It helps the driver to brake in the shortest possible distance in an emergency. As opposed to earlier systems, which are based purely on vacuum, the braking pressure is also reinforced hydraulically. In an emergency situation, where the driver does not press the brake pedal sufficiently hard, HBA helps to ensure the ABS system is used optimally and the braking distance shortened.

Optimised Hydraulic Brakes (OHB) reinforces the braking capacity in conjunction with hard braking by using hydraulics to compensate for low vacuum pressure in the brake servo.

Ready Alert Brakes (RAB) can predict rapid braking and place the brake pads against the brake discs even before the driver presses the brake pedal. In doing so, the braking system's reaction time - and braking distance - is shortened.

Fading Brake Support (FBS) is another hydraulic-based system that compensates for brake fade - a temporary reduction in stopping effectiveness caused by prolonged and hard braking.

Protective Safety

The Volvo S80 has been developed to be one of the safest cars in world. Its advanced body structure offers very high torsion rigidity and absorbs impact energy very effectively.

The patented front body structure has been divided into zones, each with a different task during the deformation process. The outer zones are responsible for most of the deformation. The closer the collision forces get to the passenger compartment, the less the material deforms.

To give each zone the correct properties, the steel grades have been varied. Four different steel grades are used. Apart from conventional bodywork steel, three different grades of high-strength steel are used: High Strength Steel, Extra High Strength Steel and Ultra High Strength Steel.

As with all other Volvo models, the S80 has transverse engines to give more room in the engine compartment for the safety systems to work efficiently. A transverse engine also reduces the risk of the powertrain intruding into the passenger compartment in a frontal collision. The larger six- and eight-cylinder engines can be mounted transversely thanks to their extremely compact designs.

New side airbag improves Side Impact Protection System (SIPS)

A new type of side collision airbag makes the Volvo patented SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) even more effective. These new side impact airbags have two separate chambers - one for the hips and one for the chest. As the hips can withstand greater forces than the chest, the lower chamber can be inflated to a pressure that is up to five times higher than in the upper chamber. The side impact airbags interact with the inflatable curtains and the body's cross-member structure to offer the most effective protection possible. Both the sills as well as the B-pillars have been reinforced to reduce the risk of intrusion into the passenger compartment. Among other things, an extra steel profile has been placed inside the sill member. Diagonally mounted cross-members made of Ultra High Strength Steel are fitted in the doors, further improving side protection.

Whiplash Protection gets even better

The Volvo system for avoiding neck injuries - WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) - is one of the most effective in the car market. In a serious rear-end collision, the front seat back support and head restraint follow the movement of the body, suppressing the forces in roughly the same way as when catching a ball. The WHIPS mechanism has now been developed even further, making the ‘catching' action even more compliant and contributing to even better contact between head and head restraint.

Pedestrian protection was a priority

Protection for pedestrians and cyclists was a priority for the S80's engineers. The front has energy-absorbing features, including a well-proportioned, soft structure in front of the bumper. This helps to counteract the risk of leg injuries. In addition, the lower edge of the front spoiler has been reinforced and moved forward, almost in line with the bumper. The aim is for the load on a leg to be distributed evenly over a greater area to reduce the risk of injury.

The bonnet has a raised shape and includes an inner honeycomb structure that distributes the loads evenly, reducing the total force of impact and reducing the risk of injury.

The Volvo S80 also features:

  • A collapsible steering wheel, which during deformation is moved horizontally for the best possible interaction with the airbag

  • Pedals with an intrusion limiting function

  • Airbags with a dual-stage function

  • Seatbelt pretensioners for all five seats

  • Seatbelt reminder for all five seats

  • Force limiters for the front seatbelts

  • Strong SIPS pipes in the seats and a rigid magnesium console in the centre of the car

Personal Car Communicator

Personal security is becoming increasingly important, and Volvo's innovative Personal Car Communicator (PCC) is a major advance in this area. First demonstrated on the Volvo Safety Concept Car in 2001, this is an advanced pocket-sized unit similar to - but far more sophisticated than - a conventional remote control.

The PCC can tell if the S80 has been left locked or unlocked or if the alarm has been activated. The PCC will be able to access this information when it is within 100 metres of the car, or stores the most recent information so that the driver can check to see if the car was locked when it was parked. The PCC also uses a sensitive heartbeat sensor to tell if there is anyone in your car.

Security

  • Electronic immobiliser fitted as standard

  • Alarm and deadlock system operated from remote control key fob

  • Home Safe and Approach lighting system fitted to every model

  • Visible VIN

  • Volvo ‘Best Manufacturer' in first and second British Insurance Car Security Awards

  • Laminated side windows available

  • Level sensor available

  • Volvo On Call telematics

Volvo's passion for safety also extends to issues of personal security. It came out as overall ‘Best Manufacturer' in the British Insurance Car Security Awards in 2004 and 2005. The BISCA aim is to raise consumer awareness of vehicle security and recognise manufacturers' efforts to make cars more secure.

The Volvo S80 is fitted as standard with a wide range of features designed to protect occupants from burglary, theft and assault. An electronic immobiliser makes it impossible to start the car without the right key, while the outer lock cylinder rotates, making it difficult to break in to. If the thief does manage to get in, via a window, for example, the deadlock system makes it impossible to open a door from the inside. The introduction of optional laminated side windows also makes it harder for thieves to gain access.

The deadlock system is activated by the remote control key fob, which allows the driver to open the car as they approach. This system can also be used to access the tailgate independently of the doors, which is a useful deterrent to opportunist thieves.

The same remote control system also switches on the alarm system, which is standard on every Volvo. The alarm is triggered if anyone attempts to open the doors, the bonnet or the tailgate. It also reacts to movement inside the car or if a window is broken. As an option, this system can be upgraded to include a level sensor that activates the alarm if the car is jacked up in any way.

An important contribution to personal security is provided by the Home Safe and Approach lighting system. By pressing a button on the remote controller when approaching the car, the driver is able to turn on the inside lights, the side marker lights and the lights in the rear-view mirrors. On leaving the car, a tweak of the headlight stalk activates the dipped beam headlamps for 30, 60 or 90 seconds (programmable by a Volvo dealer), lighting a path to the door. It's a simple system that offers considerable peace of mind.

Volvo On Call - advanced telematics

Volvo On Call is a valuable optional safety and security feature using advanced telematics. The system uses an integrated GSM telephone with a built-in GPS unit for satellite positioning, and ensures help is always close at hand. If an airbag or seat belt pre-tensioner is triggered in the event of an accident, Volvo On Call automatically calls the Emergency Services via BT999 and can also provide data of your location.

An optional Volvo On Call security package offers the added benefits of a remote door unlock facility, theft notification and vehicle tracking.

  • Volvo produces an annual Corporate Citizenship report, which is available at www.volvocars.com/citizenship

Good environmental protection is one of Volvo's cornerstones. All of the engines available in the all-new Volvo S80 are outstandingly economical, given their performance.

The manual diesel engine models have official combined fuel consumption figures of 49.6 mpg (2.0D), 44.1 mpg (2.4D) and 44.1 mpg (D5), outstanding figures for a large luxury saloon with 124 mph (2.0D), 130 mph (2.4D) and 143mph (D5) performance. Even the high-performance V8 achieves a combined figure of 23.7 mpg - yet has a top speed of 155mph and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.0 seconds.

The diesel engines have a particulate filter that reduces exhaust particulates by 95 percent, and meet EU2005 emissions by a comfortable margin.

The new in-line six-cylinder engine complies with Euro5 emission control standards and also meets the US's strict ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) II standards. The four catalytic converters and new oxygen sensors ensure that engine working temperature is reached quickly when starting from cold, further reducing emissions.

The V8 engine was the world's first to comply with Euro5 and ULEV II emission control standards.

Volvo has also added two FlexiFuel engines to the range, a 2.0F and 2.5F. The need to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, such a petrol and diesel oil, has long driven Volvo to develop a wide range of alternative fuels and technologies, such as FlexiFuel and energy-efficient drivetrains.  Volvo's new hybrid development centre in Göteborg, Sweden represents a major step on the road to sustainable mobility and FlexiFuel is one of Volvo's latest innovations.  FlexiFuel cars run on E85, a fuel that consists of 85% bioethanol and 15% regular petrol.

Bioethanol is the world's most widely used green fuel, which can be produced from a range of renewable biomass sources, such as cereals, corn and sugar-cane. When fossil fuels like diesel and petrol are burned, the CO2 emitted add to the environment's natural greenhouse effect.  When running on E85, the CO2 the crop absorbs during the growing process, as a result of photosynthesis, offsets the exhaust emissions of the car, so it recycles rather than adds CO2 to the atmosphere. E85 can achieve a CO2 reduction of up to 70% over the well-to-wheel cycle (production to combustion), compared to conventional fossil fuels.

Healthier interior

According to the 2001 RAC Report on Motoring, the typical private motorist drives for over 250 hours each year, while in the same period, a company car driver spends an average of 425 hours inside their vehicle.

Yet, while most of us are aware of vehicle emissions and air quality issues, how many drivers know that the air inside their cars may also be harmful? Or that the metals, textiles and leathers used in car interiors can emit volatile substances, which activate allergies and skin conditions?

Many motorists don't realise their car could be increasing their risks of asthma, eczema, headaches, eye irritation or even a heart attack. In recent years, the number of people suffering from allergies and other forms of hypersensitivity has been growing rapidly.

Volvo's ‘Clean inside and out' programme to create emissions-free cars is a healthy solution to the problem.

The interior of the Volvo S80 complies with a strict standard called Oeko-Tex, which sets maximum levels for dangerous substances contained in textiles and trim materials. All the leather upholstery and the trim meets Oeko-Tex standards. The components that most frequently come into contact with the skin - the door handles, ignition key and safety belt locks - are also compliant with Oeko-Tex and allergen-free.

Every Volvo S80 benefits from Volvo's Air Quality System (AQS). This constantly monitors the cabin environment to minimise odours and pollutants entering from the outside. It ensures that the air inside the car is always cleaner than that outside. The air-conditioning system also incorporates a cabin air filter that prevents dust, pollen and exhaust gas particles entering the car.

Corporate Citizenship

Volvo's commitment to the environment extends beyond the car itself. It was one of the first manufacturers to use tools to evaluate the life-cycle environmental impact of its products. The system, known as EPI (Environmental Product Information), enables Volvo to evaluate the impact of its products and processes on natural resources, ecosystems and human health. This information is available to the public at www.volvocars.com/epi.

It's a strategy that has clearly paid dividends. The Volvo S80 is built in one of the automotive world's cleanest factories with emissions of solvents from the Volvo Torslanda plant in Sweden reduced by over 90 per cent since 1972. Plus, 85 per cent of each car can be recycled and every new Volvo is backed by an EPI. Volvo's annual Corporate Citizenship report is available at www.volvocars.com/citizenship.
