Volvo XC90 Wins its First Awards in the UK

The new Volvo XC90 has already won its first awards before it’s even arrived in the showrooms, by scooping both the '4X4/SUV' and 'Safety' awards in the IVehE¹ Motor Show Design Awards 2002 at the British International Motor Show, at the NEC Birmingham – while over in America its also just been named 'SUV of the Year'².

Volvo’s XC90, making its UK debut at the British International Motor Show, is a next generation SUV with car-like handling, a stylish exterior design, and an innovative interior featuring seven individual, forward facing seats. The IVehE Motor Show Design Awards are assessed on a basis of 'pure design and quality’, and the judges thought the Volvo XC90 deserved the 4x4/SUV award over the other new models at the show, "for the way Volvo has combined its traditional values of function and safety in an effective and well-designed SUV format". Similarly, they selected the XC90 for the Safety award because of Volvo’s "overall attention to safety design and especially for advances more…     Volvo XC90 wins its first awards…2 in roll-over protection, with Boron steel roof structure and an advanced airbag control system that sustains protection levels during an extended roll-over accident".

Commenting on the XC90’s first awards, Simon Munn, Sales and Marketing Director, Volvo Car UK, said: "These awards are a great acknowledgement of the quality and innovative design of the Volvo XC90, and proves this car takes a great step ahead of its rivals. "We’ve already seen a phenomenal level of interest in the XC90 at the motorshow, and these awards confirm it’s a ‘must-see’ car for anyone visiting the show," he continued.

Remark: It is always essential and recommended that everyone is using the safety-belt to get the best protection in an accident.

Notes to Editors: ¹ The Institute of Vehicle Engineers (IvehE) ² The Volvo XC90 scooped the 2003 ‘SUV of the Year’ award from America’s top-selling magazine (with a circulation of 1.27 million), Motor Trend.
