Volvo S40/V50 - First Volvo under 5.0 l/100 km

Volvo Car Corporation has expanded the engine range for its new S40 and V50 compact models (launched in 2003) with the addition of 1.6-litre engines in both petrol and diesel versions.
With an average fuel consumption of 4.9 litres per 100 km (Volvo S40 with manual gearbox), the new diesel is the most fuel-efficient engine ever offered by Volvo Cars.
 
The 2-litre diesel introduced earlier in the new Volvo S40 and V50 has now been complemented by a 1.6-litre option. The new engine is a fuel-efficient and environmentally compatible unit offering first-class driveability.
The 1.6-litre diesel is a modern, four-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts and the latest four-valve technology. Both the cylinder block and head are of aluminium to minimise weight and fuel consumption.
The diesel engine is a turbocharged unit with variable turbo geometry. The fuel injection system is based on modern common rail technology, operating at high pressure (max. 1600 bar) for efficient combustion.
The new diesel develops a maximum output of 81 kW (110 bhp) and a torque of 240 Nm, providing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 12 seconds (0-60 mph in 11.4 seconds).

Lively lightweight petrol engine
The new petrol engine is a four-cylinder, 1.6-litre, normally aspirated unit – a modern, lightweight aluminium engine featuring four-valve technology and a modern fuel injection  system. The unit offers the same efficient combustion technology and exhaust gas treatment as other Volvo engines for maximum fuel economy combined with minimum exhaust emissions.
The engine output is 74 kW (100 bhp) and the torque 150 Nm, making it a lively unit with excellent acceleration from rest, and making the car comfortable and easy to drive.

Five-speed manual gearboxes
The gearbox for the 1.6D engine is an extremely smooth five-speed unit affording fast gear changing and ease of driving. A dual mass flywheel contributes to smooth gearchanging.

The petrol engine drives a manual five-speed gearbox, which has been adapted for the economical 1.6-litre engine, with close ratios contributing to first-class acceleration – from 0 to 100 km/h in 11,9 seconds (0-60 mph in 11.3 seconds).

The 1.6-litre engines represent a welcome addition to the Volvo range.
