The innovative Volvo 3CC concept car beat off competition from the world’s other car makers to win a total five gold medals for its environmental performance as well as taking the overall prize for best prototype design at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum contest. Two other Volvo cars, the Volvo S80 T6 and S60 PZEV, also won medals, scooping Volvo Car Corporation 10 gold and six silver medals in all at the international contest staged in Shanghai, October 12-14.
Volvo Car Corporation has demonstrated the strength of its sustainable mobility vision by winning a host of medals for its eco-friendly performance at the annual international Michelin Challenge Bibendum contest, which debuted in China this year.
Acknowledging the viability of Volvo’s steps towards sustaining future mobility, the Challenge Bibendum jury handed out a total of 10 gold and six silver medals to the Volvo 3CC and existing Volvo S80 T6 and S60 PZEV models for their fuel efficiency, regulated emissions, CO2 emissions, acceleration and braking performance. The Volvo 3CC also won the Michelin Challenge Bibendum overall prize for best prototype design.

“We are overjoyed that the Volvo 3CC – unveiled for the first time in Shanghai – did so well by not only winning gold medals for its eco-friendly performance, but also by taking the prestigious design prize,” says Lars Erik Lundin, Vice President & General Manager of the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center (VMCC) in California where the vehicle was created. “We certainly achieved our goal to deliver fuel efficiency, versatility, comfort and safety in a car both exciting to look at and drive.”
The two other Volvo prize winners, the Volvo S80 T6 and S60 PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle), highlight the steps Volvo Car Corporation is taking today to deliver on its pro-environment ethos and sustainable mobility vision. The S60 PZEV currently has the highest environmental ranking of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which limits hydrocarbon emissions virtually to zero.

Confronting challenges of emissions and congestion
The six year old annual Michelin Challenge Bibendum is an international competition for the auto industry testing vehicles for e.g. energy efficiency, emissions, noise, acceleration and handling.
