Volvo C40 Recharge - Model Year 2023

Volvo C40 Recharge - Model Year 2023

The Volvo C40 Recharge is the first Volvo model in the company’s history to be designed as pure electric only. The C40 Recharge is based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), an advanced vehicle platform co-developed within the Geely Group.

The C40 Recharge is a crossover with all the benefits of an SUV, but with a lower and sleeker design featuring improved aerodynamics. It features a striking rear-end design to go with this lower roofline, while the new front design introduces a new face for electric Volvos and includes headlights with state-of-the-art pixel technology.

Inside, the C40 Recharge offers the high seating position that most Volvo drivers prefer. The standard fixed panoramic roof adds a feeling of light and space, and it is also the first Volvo model with a completely leather-free interior.

The new exclusive Tailored Wool Blend upholstery in the Recharge models is made from 30 per cent responsibly produced wool and 70 per cent polyester with contrasting white piping, created to optimise the experience of contemporary, sustainable luxury.

The advanced air purifier system prevents up to 80 per cent of hazardous PM 2.5 particles entering the cabin. No matter the conditions outside, the solution can help occupants enjoy better and healthier air quality, while having the possibility to monitor particle and pollen levels outside the car.

Connectivity and infotainment

Like the XC40 Recharge, the C40 Recharge comes with one of the best infotainment systems on the market, jointly developed with Google. It provides consumers with Google apps and built-in services, such as Google Maps, Google Assistant, and apps on Google Play.

Unlimited data enables superior connectivity, and the C40 Recharge will receive software updates over the air. This means it will continue to improve over time after it has left the factory, keeping continuously up to date with the latest technology.

Powertrain technology

The C40 Recharge comes with twin electric motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear axle. These are powered by a 78kWh battery that can be fast charged from 10 to 80 per cent in just over 30 minutes *. The car has a certified range of around 451 km (WLTP Combined) **.

As of 2023, the C40 Recharge is also available with one electric single motor on the front axle. This version comes with a 69kWh battery and an anticipated range of up to 438 km (WLTP Combined) * on a single charge under the WLTP drive cycle. The battery can charge from 10 to 80 per cent of capacity in just over 30 minutes ** on a fast-charging system.

More details around the powertrain offer can be found in the technical specifications.

Safety and driver assistance

With the weight of 500 kg for the high voltage battery and the absence of a combustion engine in mind, the C40 Recharge’s body structure is designed to absorb even more crash energy than an equivalent car with an internal combustion engine.

The battery is protected by a safety cage which consists of a frame of extruded aluminium. It has been embedded in the middle of the car’s body structure, creating a built-in crumple zone around it. The battery’s location under the floor of the car also lowers the centre of gravity of the car for better protection against roll-overs.

At the rear, the electric powertrain has been integrated in the body structure to realise a better distribution of collision forces away from the cabin.

The C40 Recharge is also equipped with Volvo Cars’ latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): a modern, scalable active safety system that consists of an array of radars, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors.

This platform enables the development and deployment of active safety systems, such as the detection of other road users, automatic braking and collision avoidance. Through the Pilot Assist function, it also allows for gentle driver support from standstill up to highway speeds.
