Electrification

For Volvo Cars, electrification is the future and we are committed to entering a new era that goes beyond the internal combustion engine. That is why in the summer of 2017, we were the first traditional car maker to commit to all-out electrification. From 2019, every new Volvo will come with an electric motor, phasing out cars only powered by an internal combustion engine. Mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids will be available as transition options on the road to fully electric cars, and Volvo Cars is the only car maker to offer a plug-in variant on every model in its line-up.

Our first electric car, the XC40 Recharge, was revealed in the fall of 2019. It is the first model to appear as part of our brand new Recharge car line, with Recharge the overarching name for all chargeable Volvos with an electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain. The XC40 Recharge is the first of a family of all-electric Volvos. Over the next five years, we will launch a fully electric car every year, as we aim for all-electric cars to be 50 per cent of global sales by 2025, with the rest hybrids. Already in 2020, Volvo Cars aims to increase plug-in hybrid sales to 20 per cent of the global total.
