TORONTO -- Sales of Volvo vehicles accelerated in January as the popular V70 Cross Country helped Volvo Cars of Canada Ltd. post an increase of 10.9 per cent over the same month last year.

The sale of 480 units for the month was 47 cars ahead of the 433 sold in January, 2001, the company reported.

Volvo Canada president Paul Cummings credited steadily improving economic news and good dealership traffic for the improvement in what is traditionally a slow month for the company.

"We are hearing more good economic news daily and that translates into more confident customers who come through the doors of our retailers," said Cummings. "We're starting to see some of the gloomy headlines disappear and that is reassuring for people considering a major purchase."

Sales of all Volvo station wagons were ahead in January vs last year, Cummings added, suggesting the predicted growth of the wagon segment is already underway. Nearly half of Volvo sales for the month were Volvo V40, V70 or V70 Cross Country models.

Volvo Cars of Canada is part of the Volvo Car Corporation of Göteborg, Sweden. The company provides marketing, sales, parts, service, technology and training support to the 42 Volvo automobile retailers across the country. The 2002 Volvo automobile line includes the flagship S80 luxury sedan, versatile V70 wagon and rugged Cross Country, C70 coupe and convertible, the sporty S60 sedan and compact S40 and V40 models.
