TORONTO (July 4, 2005) –With a 14 per cent increase in vehicle sales in June, Volvo Cars of Canada Ltd. reported the company’s strongest first half in more than 30 years.

Volvo retailers sold 1,098 vehicles in June this year, ahead of the 963 units sold in the same month of 2004. The first half of 2005 netted 6,107 units, 10.9 per cent ahead of the 5,505 units sold in the same period of 2004. The company’s best-ever first half was in 1974 with 6,289 vehicles sold.

“In addition to an excellent first half we have also completed the first full year of sales of the redesigned Volvo S40 sports sedan and the new V50 sportswagon,” said Paul Cummings, president and CEO of Volvo Cars of Canada Ltd. “These two vehicles have proven to be extremely popular with Canadians and the perfect compliment to the strongest product line-up in company history.”

Cummings added that July will begin with the launch of the 2006 model year for Volvo Canada and will be led by the company’s first vehicle powered by an eight cylinder engine. “With the introduction of the XC90 V8, Volvo Canada will reach further into the upper-echelons of the premium luxury SUV market,” he said. “However, it will be done in a way that’s in keeping with the values people expect from Volvo.”

The 2006 XC90 V8 is the first gasoline-powered eight cylinder engine capable of meeting the stringent Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle II (ULEV II) standard in the U.S. “Thanks to a compact engine design, the XC90 V8 also achieves the same strict crash safety demands we set for its five cylinder counterpart,” Cummings added.

“With the XC90 V8 leading the way into the 2006 model year, we feel Volvo Canada and its retailers are well positioned to continue the strong sales performance we’ve enjoyed so far,” Cummings concluded.

Volvo Cars of Canada Ltd. is part of the Volvo Car Corporation of Göteborg, Sweden. The company provides marketing, sales, parts, service, technology and training support to the 43 Volvo automobile retailers across the country. The company’s product range includes the flagship S80 luxury sedan, the versatile V70 wagon, the S60 sports sedan, and an XC-line of vehicles that includes the rugged XC70 and the award-winning XC90 sport utility vehicle. For 2005, the company is introducing the completely redesigned S40 sports sedan and V50 sportswagon, providing performance for a new generation.
