Volvo kicks off 2004 with improved sales

For immediate release

The continued popularity of the Volvo XC90 sport utility vehicle and resurgence in the sales of the elegant S80 luxury sedan and versatile V70 wagon helped generate a 3.1 per cent improvement in Volvo vehicle sales in January of 2004, the company announced.

Sales of 573 units during January surpassed the 556 vehicles in the same month of 2003, and propelled Volvo Cars of Canada Ltd. to its 17th consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth.

Sales of the popular XC90 were particularly strong in January, and improved S80 and V70 sales contributed to the total, said Volvo Cars of Canada president and chief executive Paul Cummings. Vehicles with all-wheel drive represented more than half of the total sales for the month. "With the addition of the S80 AWD to the line-up, we have expanded the availability of all-wheel drive and we will continue to reach new buyers," said Cummings.

"January was a difficult month for the industry," he added, "and it is reassuring to start a new year with positive momentum."

The arrival later this year of the new Volvo S40 and V50 are expected to contribute to that momentum. The new 2005 entry-level premium sedan (S40) and sportswagon (V50) will not only give the company new entries in a burgeoning segment of the market, they will add to the all-wheel drive line-up. The two new entries were shown for the first time in Canada at the Montreal auto show in January and will be featured at the Volvo display at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto next week.

Volvo Cars of Canada is part of the Volvo Car Corporation of Göteborg, Sweden. The company provides marketing, sales, parts, service, technology and training support to the 43 Volvo automobile retailers across the country. The 2004 Volvo vehicle line includes the flagship S80 luxury sedan, versatile V70 wagon and rugged XC70, exotic C70 convertible, the sporty S60 sedan, compact S40 and V40, and the award-winning Volvo XC90 sport utility vehicle, described as "the next generation SUV."
