2003 Volvo sales on track for best year since 1974

For immediate release

TORONTO (Dec. 16, 2003) -- With two weeks still to go, Volvo Cars of Canada Ltd. has recorded the best sales year since 1974 and is on route to the third best result in the brand's history in Canada, president Paul Cummings announced today.

Good early December sales pushed the total result for 2003 for Volvo Cars of Canada to 10,274 units, well ahead of the 10,245 sold in all of 1997 and into the record books as the third best year since the company began keeping records in Canada in 1958. The sales tally was taken as of the close of business on Saturday, December 13.

The end of December is traditionally slow for auto sales, but Cummings is optimistic that sales momentum will continue to propel Canadian retailers toward record territory in the closing days of the year. "We've achieved our objectives, and then some. But our retailers continue to enjoy strong traffic and great sales momentum as we head toward the holidays, so we'll continue to be optimistic," said Cummings.

The best sales year for Volvo cars in Canada was 11,763 units in 1974, when the company sold the popular Volvo 140 series, an affordable and comfortable European alternative to smaller Japanese cars and larger U.S. models. "Nearly 30 years later, our model mix of stylish, sophisticated cars puts us firmly into the premium categories and yet some of the virtues that made Volvos popular in 1974 - safety, durability, value - are still part of the appeal of the brand," said Cummings.

The full sales results for 2003 will be reported early in 2004. More than half of sales to date have been vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive, making Volvo a major player in that market.

Volvo Cars of Canada is part of the Volvo Car Corporation of Göteborg, Sweden. The company provides marketing, sales, parts, service, technology and training support to the 43 Volvo automobile retailers across the country. The 2004 Volvo vehicle line includes the flagship S80 luxury sedan, versatile V70 wagon and rugged XC70, exotic C70 convertible, the sporty S60 sedan, compact S40 and V40, and the award-winning Volvo XC90 sport utility vehicle, described as "the next generation SUV."
