Richard Göransson secure perfect STCC weekend to claim championship lead

Richard Göransson made a perfect Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) weekend at Falkenberg with pole position and two victories to claim the championship lead going into the summer break.

“This has been an amazing weekend where the team has given me a perfect car and I have not put a wheel wrong. The feeling is great to head into the summer break in the lead,” said Richard Göransson.

The first race saw Göransson starting from pole and heading the field from lights to flag, despite hard pressure from both team-mate Robert Dahlgren and SEAT rival Johan Kristoffersson in very wet conditions.

The chaotic second race had Göransson starting tenth and working his way up through the field to win by close to nine seconds.

While Göransson had the perfect weekend, team-mate Dahlgren had a nightmare weekend. He was eliminated in race one by Emma Kimiläinen, who received a drive through penalty for the incident, and was forced to retire in the second race following a puncture.

“I am thoroughly disappointed to have two non-finishes that were beyond my control. It feels even worse as I really felt we had the potential to challenge for the win in both races. But there is no point digging into this, I will be back to fight hard in the next race,” said Robert Dahlgren.

Prince Carl Philip secured his best result of the season with fourth in the second race and eighth in the first race, climbing to tenth position in the championship.

“This has been a chaotic race weekend with a lot of ups and downs. I feel that we could have got more from the weekend, but I am still pleased with my Q1 result and fourth in the second race,” said Prince Carl Philip.

The result from the weekend at Falkenberg has brought Göransson up into the championship lead while Dahlgren drops to second, 47 points from Göransson with three races remaining of the 2016 STCC season.

“We should be pleased when winning both races and extending the championship lead. But it feels like we leave Falkenberg with lost points to what we had the potential to with three cars. The only consolation is that the “right” driver claimed maximum points, keeping in mind of Dahlgren’s WTCC agenda that potentially could mean that he misses the last two STCC races,” said Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Head of Motorsport at Polestar.

STCC resumes on August 13-14th at Karlskoga Motorstadion.
