Volvo XC70 - model year 2015

Volvo Car Group paved the way for a totally new segment with the V70 Cross Country in 1997. The main focus during the continuous development of the XC models has been to maintain the aura of a very comfortable on-road car with capable, off-road potential. The rugged and refined contemporary look reflects the XC70's underlying strength and capability. The new XC70 is available with two four-cylinder engines from the all-new Drive-E engine family: the turbo diesel D4 and the petrol turbo T5.

DESIGN

Bold and wide

A number of new exterior design cues, introduced in 2013, sharpen the XC70's contemporary road presence. These include a bolder front grille, a new bigger ironmark, and details such as the Daytime Running Lights and added matte silver touches. The XC70 is available with wheels up to 19-inches in diameter. The aim is to emphasise the luxurious feel with a more road-hugging stance. The XC70 also features off-road design cues such as skidplates that protect the car on really uneven surfaces.

Luxury interiors with first-class functionality

The interior news includes a new design on the front seats, jewellery knobs and a frameless rear-view mirror.

The XC70 offers first-class comfort and sophistication combined with an impressive 575 litres of load space. The rear seats can be folded down in three 40/20/40 segments, giving more options to configure the space. With all of the rear seats folded flat, the load space grows to a cavernous 1,600 litres. The power-operated tailgate, operated remotely via the key fob or the dashboard, is another human-centric detail.

The rear seat can integrate double two-stage child seats - with one simple movement, booster cushions pop up from the seat giving a comfortable and safe ride height for children from the age of three and upwards.

INSCRIPTION

Luxury interior package

The XC70 sophistication is also reflected in the bespoke interior package. The Inscription is a truly bespoke palette of options that makes it possible for the customer to choose personal combinations.

The Inscription Package features a complete luxury upgrade of the interior. This includes Inscription Soft Leather upholstery, leather instrument panel, soft leather on the Inscription embroidered head rests, soft leather centre arm rest, unique floor mats and tread plates with Inscription logo.

There is also a selection of single Inscription features, such as a Dark Walnut deco inlay.

NEW XC70 EDITION

Dynamic chassis and high-gloss details

The new XC70 Edition is designed for customers who want to add some extra spice to these flexible models. The driver appeal is enhanced with a newly developed chassis – the first time ever that the capable XC70 can be equipped with a dynamic chassis

The XC70 Edition also includes a number of exterior and interior design features. The XC70 Edition features several high gloss black details. Specially designed 18-inch, diamond cut wheels in glossy black are standard.

Inside, there are seats in black leather with contrasting cream stitching. The stitching is echoed on the door panels, the front centre armrest, the floor mats and on the sport steering wheel. The dynamic look is enhanced with sport pedals.

CHASSIS & POWER TRAINS

Controlled ride

The car has been developed and balanced to give a first-class driving experience, based largely on pliant ride and secure road holding allied to high stability. Stability is particularly important when driving with many passengers and a lot of luggage.

All-Wheel Drive and the optional Hill Descent Control are a further boost to the XC70's go-anywhere promise.

The XC70 can be optionally specified with an active chassis based on Volvo's Four-C technology. It is an advanced self-regulating chassis system that uses a number of sensors to continuously monitor the car's behaviour. The dampers are adjusted to suit the current driving conditions in mere fractions of a second.

Powerful T6 version

The T6 petrol engine has a displacement of 3.0 litres and pumps out 304 hp and no less than 440 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption is 10.6 l/100 km (EU Combined). The engine's power is delivered to the wheels via Volvo's second-generation six-speed automatic Geartronic transmission. All Wheel Drive (AWD) is standard.

All-new T5 with 245 hp

The new four-cylinder Drive-E engine T5 has 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 6.7 l/100 km (157 g/km) in the XC70.

D5 with 215 hp

The five-cylinder D5 turbo diesel has 215 hp and 420 Nm in the manual version (440Nm with automatic) of torque. All Wheel Drive is standard. The D5 with manual gearbox has fuel consumption at 5.3l/100 km (139 g/km), while the figures for the D5 AWD with automatic are 6.4 l/100 km (169 g/km).

All-new D4 with 181 hp

The new D4 Drive-E engine comes with 181 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The engine features world-first i-ART technology that helps to cut fuel consumption. With pressure feedback from each fuel injector instead of using a traditional single pressure sensor in the common rail, i-ART makes it possible to continuously monitor and adapt fuel injection per combustion in each of the four cylinders.

Fuel consumption in an XC70 with manual gearbox is down to 4.5 l/100 km, which translates into CO2 emissions of 117 g/km. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 4.9 l/100 km (129 g/km) in the XC70. There are also two five-cylinder versions of the D4 with 181 hp and 163 hp.

SENSUS

Adaptive Digital Display

The Adaptive Digital Display uses an active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display to bring the driver personalised information. There are three themes to choose from: Elegance, Eco and Performance.

New infotainment experience – Sensus Connect

The Digital Display theme colours are also echoed in the connected infotainment system Sensus Connect, which is now introduced in the XC70. It features a refreshed user interface with a number of innovative functions offering customers a fully connected experience.

The cloud-based services allow the driver to find and pay for parking from the car, discover new restaurants at the destination, stream favourite music seamlessly and much more. The driver can also have text messages read out aloud without taking hands off the wheel.

The brand new app Connected Service Booking is only the first step in making the dealer workshop fully integrated into the digital eco-system. The car will not only tell the driver when it’s time to visit the garage but also suggest an appointment at the Volvo dealership.

Improved Premium Sound system

The Sensus family also includes an improved top-of-the-line Premium Sound system with a 5x130W amplifier with the next-generation sound enhancement software Dirac Live and up to 12 loudspeakers, including a new long-throw woofer for enhanced bass, new soft dome tweeters for soft highs and new, larger mid-range centre and door speakers.

With the new Premium Sound system by Harman Kardon the driver can enjoy an immersive sound stage with improved bass performance, while being able to turn up the volume with full audio clarity.

Heated steering wheel and paddle shifters

To give drivers in cold climate extra comfort, three-spoke steering wheels can be specified with electric heating. Cars with automatic transmission can get paddle shifters that give the driver the opportunity to shift gear manually with both hands on the wheel. Cars equipped with a rain sensor can now also get an electrically heated windscreen for rapid de-icing on cold winter days.

SAFETY

IntelliSafe, Volvo's blanket name for all active safety systems, is an important part of the driver-centric approach in the XC70.

Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection technology

New advanced software, including more rapid vision processing, has made it possible to extend Volvo Cars' present detection and auto brake technology to cover certain cyclist situations as well.

The Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake is equipped with an advanced sensor system that scans the area ahead. If a cyclist heading in the same direction as the car suddenly swerves out in front of the car as it approaches from behind and collision is imminent, there is an instant warning and full braking power is applied.

The technology also detects if a pedestrian steps out into the road in front of the car. If the driver does not respond in time, the car can warn and automatically activate the brakes.

City Safety - active up to 50 km/h

The XC70 features the upgraded City Safety system. This system is active at speeds up to 50 km/h. The car automatically brakes if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front slows down or stops - or if the car is approaching a stationary vehicle too fast.

Active High Beam Control - more relaxed driving in the dark

The Active High Beam Control helps the driver use high beam more efficiently. It offers automatic switching between high and low beam at the right moment.

Road Sign Information - an extra "eye" on the traffic environment

Road Sign Information supports the driver by displaying road signs in the instrument display. Road Sign Information can be combined with the Speed Alert function, which provides the driver with a visual warning in the speedometer if the speed limit is exceeded.

Volvo On Call combined with Bluetooth

The Volvo On Call system can be combined with the Bluetooth mobile phone service. The Bluetooth connection allows hands-free phone conversations as well as music streaming from a preferred Bluetooth enabled portable music player. Volvo is actually the only brand to offer Bluetooth music streaming throughout the entire vehicle range.

Keep in touch via mobile application

A mobile application that makes sure that the driver can stay in touch with the parked car via an iPhone or Android smart phone. The mobile application is an extension of Volvo On Call.

Owners of all new models with Volvo On Call can download the application that opens up a range of connectivity possibilities. The mobile app is free and downloaded via the iPhone and Android application stores. The app is designed to offer the owner an intuitive, easy-to-use relationship with the car from a distance.

Crumple zones made using different grades of steel

The patented front body structure is divided into zones, each of which has a different task during the deformation sequence. The outer zones are responsible for most of the deformation. The closer the collision forces get to the passenger compartment, the less the material deforms. In order to give each zone the right properties, different grades of steel are used in different structures.
